Cornerstone Montgomery

Cornerstone Montgomery We empower people living with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders to live, work, and integrate successfully within the community.

Above all, we value respect for the people we serve. We stand beside the people we serve as allies in pursuit of their personal goals and as bearers of hope. In order to be effective allies, we value evidence-based services. We value a work environment of mutual trust and respect.

Behind every recovery journey is a story of resilience, growth, and hope.

For Neil, living with mental health challenges and the effects of past trauma made it difficult to talk about his experiences and process the emotions he carried with him. Through Cornerstone's Studio In-Sight art program, he found a creative outlet, supportive community, and a sense of purpose.

Today, art continues to be an important part of Neil's wellness journey, giving him a way to express himself, connect with others, and work through experiences that can be difficult to put into words.

His story reminds us that recovery doesn't look the same for everyone. Sometimes, finding the right outlet and a community where you feel supported can help you discover your voice, build confidence, and take meaningful steps forward.

Read Neil's inspiring story and learn how finding his creative voice became an important part of his journey.

For Neil, words weren't always enough. Through art, he found a way to express difficult experiences, process his emotions, and share a part of himself with others.

His words are a powerful reminder that wellness looks different for everyone. Sometimes, it starts with finding the outlet, activity, or community that helps you feel understood.

“I couldn't talk about my trauma. Art was the only way I could get it out.”

What is one activity or outlet that helps you express yourself or find a sense of peace?

September is a month to talk about hope, connection, and the possibility of recovery.

We recognize both National Su***de Prevention Month and National Recovery Month, two important observances that remind us of the power of reaching out, asking for help, and supporting one another.

Sometimes, a simple conversation or a reminder that someone is not alone can make a meaningful difference. Recovery may look different for everyone, but every step forward matters.

This month, let’s check in. Let’s listen. Let’s encourage. And let’s remind each other that hope is real and recovery is possible.

Together, we can be Bearers of Hope.

As we wrap up our National Wellness Month Staff & Client Spotlight series, we're grateful to share one final perspective on what wellness can look like.

This week, meet Corey, a client in our Vocational Program. Corey reminds us that wellness is about paying attention to how we're doing, recognizing when we need support, and celebrating the progress we make along the way.

For Corey, feeling well is connected to surrounding herself with positive and supportive people, working toward goals, and knowing that the things she does can make a difference in her own life and the lives of others. She also recognizes that every day won't look the same, and that using coping skills, leaning on support systems, and staying focused on where you're going can help you move through difficult moments.

Her story is a powerful reminder that you don't have to face life's obstacles alone. Sometimes, wellness is about taking the next step, asking for support, and remembering just how many challenges you've already overcome.

We're thankful to Corey for sharing her perspective and helping us close out this month's series with a message of encouragement and hope.

What helps you keep moving forward when you face an obstacle?

Meet Dushani Harischandra, Program Supervisor for Cornerstone's Transition-Aged Youth (TAY) Program.

In last month's Cornerstone Connections, Dushani shared what inspired her to pursue a career in behavioral health, what brings her joy in her work, and why making mental health care more accessible and inclusive matters to her.

She also opened up about her passion for traditional Sri Lankan dance, her journey toward becoming a licensed therapist, and a powerful lesson that has stayed with her throughout her career: difficult moments are only one part of our journey.

Get to know Dushani and learn more about the person behind the work in our latest Meet the Staff feature.

As we continue our National Wellness Month Staff Spotlight series, we're highlighting another Cornerstone team member and her perspective on making wellness a priority.

This week, meet Barbara Allen, Program Manager with our Residential Rehabilitation Program. Barbara emphasizes the importance of practicing the same wellness habits we encourage in others. For her, that means creating a healthy balance between work and personal life, setting boundaries, and making time for the people and activities that matter outside of work.

Her perspective is a powerful reminder that taking care of yourself isn't selfish or something to save for when you have extra time. Prioritizing your well-being helps you have more to give to the people and responsibilities that matter most.

What's one boundary or habit that helps you protect your well-being? Share it with us in the comments.

A look back at last month's Cornerstone Connections

In July, Dr. Kumi explored the importance of culturally responsive care and how our culture, lived experiences, and identities can shape the way we understand mental health and seek support.

Her article offers thoughtful reminders for all of us: listen before assuming, recognize the impact of culture, challenge our own biases, create spaces where people feel safe and respected, and continue learning.

Creating more inclusive mental health care starts with a willingness to listen, learn, and understand.
