The Registrar of Voters in Norwich CT posted this message:
After a host of complaints from some candidates regarding how 'slow' our vote count was, I received the following from one of them.
Thanks for the job that you do. The separation of tasks on election night ensures that our votes are counted properly and to prevent election tampering. No one person, not even the Registrars themselves can influence the count and there are multiple checks in place to assure the public that every legally cast vote is counted and that questionable ballots are separated out and vetted before being added to the totals. I'd rather that security and accuracy take priority over reporting speed. Our nationwide system of decentralized voting control has led to a dependable outcome for nearly 250 years, with few incidents of irregularities - certainly few that might have changed the outcome of elections.
Close elections are more burdensome on election officials (and municipal elections are always close elections, because the number of voters is lower) as every vote counts and needs to be accounted for. While voting is our primary duty to keep democracy alive, artificial deadlines of press deadlines or candidate celebrations should not be added to the election night equation. Fairness, accuracy, and keeping the vote safe and secret should always take precedence over the priorities of others. In this world of quick responses, people oftentimes forget that a fast response may not be the best outcome. We need to foster patience so that the announced outcomes are reliable, verifiable and true. We all need to trust the outcome, even if it happens outside of our ridiculously short attention spans.
Small tweaks might speed up the process, but many of those changes probably require legislative action and are outside of any action allowed under current laws and regulations.
Please extend my thanks to all the poll workers who try to accurately follow the law and to everyone involved in the election process to maintain the sanctity of voting - the bedrock of every democratic government.
