South Hills Interfaith Movement - SHIM

South Hills Interfaith Movement - SHIM Together, with teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty in the South Hills.

Born nearly fifty years ago as South Hills Interfaith Ministries by, no kidding, a priest, a rabbi and a minister, SHIM has been providing food, clothing and services to people in need in Pittsburgh’s southern suburban neighborhoods ever since. Faced with unprecedented new levels of suburban poverty, SHIM is expanding its work to include more neighbors helping more neighbors in need. Together, with teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in our service area.

More than a food pantry. 🧡✨

At SHIM, we believe that self-sufficiency is the driving force behind everything we do. Whether it’s delivering fresh groceries to a neighbor who can’t leave their home, providing 24-hour food lockers for working parents, or offering one-on-one financial mentorship, our goal is to help our neighbors move from crisis to stability.

This video takes you behind the scenes of our work and introduces you to the incredible volunteers and community members who make it all possible. It’s a powerful reminder that hunger doesn't have a specific "look," and that we are all stronger when we look out for one another.

🌟 Today marks the start of Welcoming Week! 🌟

At SHIM, every day is an opportunity to build a community where everyone feels they belong. Through our work with refugees and immigrants, we see firsthand how our neighborhoods grow stronger when neighbors of all backgrounds come together to support one another.

Welcoming Week is a time to affirm what we strive for all year round: creating inclusive spaces where every person—no matter where they were born—has the opportunity to achieve prosperity and feel at home in the South Hills.

When we build strong connections today, we ensure a brighter, more collective future for everyone tomorrow. Join us this week in celebrating the diversity that makes our community so vibrant! 🤝🧡 Read Susan's story at https://bit.ly/49F9v0v.

Did you know September is Hunger Action Month? 🧡

Hunger isn’t always visible, but it affects our neighbors right here in the South Hills every single day. From families working multiple jobs to seniors on fixed incomes, many in our community are forced to make impossible choices between buying groceries and paying for utilities or medicine. Feeding America estimates that local families are facing a collective $124 million annual shortfall in their food budgets.

This month, we join the nationwide effort to raise awareness and inspire action. Together, we can end hunger one helping at a time.

While we are still tallying the final numbers and handing out the last few backpacks, we couldn’t wait another moment to say THANK YOU. Because of your generosity and the support of our dedicated community partners, we’ve been able to serve more than 1,500 children this season!

Now that kids are officially back in the classroom, it’s a wonderful feeling to know they are sitting at their desks with the tools they need to focus, learn, and succeed. Whether it’s a fresh notebook, a sturdy backpack, or a set of sharpened pencils, these supplies represent so much more than just "stuff"—they represent a community that believes in their potential.

To everyone who donated, volunteered, and partnered with us: thank you for helping our neighbors start the school year with confidence! ✏️🎒✨ Learn more about how we help kids at https://bit.ly/3Moz3nq.
