Congratulations to Officer Candidate Jamel Howard, 193rd Regiment (RTI), for finishing first among OCS Region B candidates from Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia during the 9-mile Ruck March at Aberdeen Proving Ground–Edgewood Area!

OC Howard completed the road march in an impressive 1 hour, 56 minutes—averaging approximately 12 minutes, 53 seconds per mile and finishing more than 41 minutes ahead of the Army OCS standard of 2 hours, 37 minutes, 30 seconds.

In recognition of his outstanding performance, Howard was coined by Brig. Gen. Andrew Collins, Assistant Adjutant General–Army for the Maryland National Guard.

Today, the Soldiers, Civilians, Families, and distinguished guests of the 193rd Regional Training Institute gathered to honor tradition, recognize dedicated leadership, and witness the official transfer of command during the 193rd RTI Change of Command Ceremony.

🎖️ During this time-honored military tradition, LTC Gary Nelson relinquished command to LTC Brain Nichols through the symbolic passing of the regimental colors, representing the transfer of authority, responsibility, and trust from one commander to the next.

👏 The ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognize LTC Nelson’s outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment to the Soldiers of the 193rd RTI, and the lasting impact he has made on the Regiment throughout his tenure. We also extend our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Melissa Nelson for her steadfast support and dedication throughout his command. 💐

🇺🇸 Honoring a Legacy of Service 🇺🇸

Today, the Soldiers, families, and friends of the 193rd Regional Training Institute gathered to recognize and celebrate the remarkable career of First Sergeant Shawn Baum during his final official formation.

After more than 25 years of dedicated military service, 1SG Baum was honored for his unwavering commitment to the Delaware Army National Guard, the Soldiers he led, and the communities he served. Throughout his career, he embodied selfless service, professionalism, and leadership, leaving a lasting impact on generations of Soldiers.

As part of the ceremony, 1SG Baum was inducted into the prestigious Order of the Griffin, one of Delaware’s highest military honors. The Order of the Griffin recognizes those who have served the Delaware Army National Guard with honor, integrity, and distinguished service.

The ceremony also recognized the sacrifices and support of the Baum family. Shannon Baum received the Spousal Appreciation Award and Army Spouse Medal for her steadfast dedication throughout 1SG Baum’s military career, while Camryn and Braden were presented with Army Military Child Medals in recognition of their support and resilience as members of a military family. ❤️🇺🇸

The 193rd RTI extends its deepest gratitude to 1SG Baum and his family for their years of service, sacrifice, and commitment to our Soldiers and our nation.

🎖️ CHANGE OF RESPONSIBILITY 🎖️

Today, the 193rd Regional Training Institute conducted a Change of Responsibility Ceremony, officially passing the responsibility of the Regiment from First Sergeant Shawn Baum to First Sergeant Randy McFarland.

The Change of Responsibility is a time-honored Army tradition that symbolizes the transfer of authority, accountability, and trust between senior enlisted leaders. Through the passing of the NCO Sword, the Regiment recognized the dedicated service and leadership of 1SG Baum while welcoming 1SG McFarland as the newest First Sergeant of the 193rd RTI. ⚔️

Over the past several years, 1SG Baum has served the Soldiers and cadre of the 193rd RTI with professionalism, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His leadership has helped shape the Regiment and ensure the continued success of our training mission. 🇺🇸

As 1SG McFarland assumes responsibility, we look forward to the experience, mentorship, and leadership he brings to the formation. We are confident the Regiment will continue to thrive under his guidance as we develop tomorrow’s leaders. 💪

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Shannon Baum and Stacey McFarland, whose support and sacrifice have played an invaluable role throughout their military journeys. 🌹
