Summer Safety Reminder for Parents & Students

As the 2025-2026 School year comes to an end and summer break begins, the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office encourages everyone to make safety a priority while enjoying the season. Here are a few tips for a safe and fun summer.

Parents:

*Know where your children are and who they are with.
**Set clear expectations for curfews and check-ins.
***Talk with your children about internet safety, peer pressure, and making responsible choices.
****Ensure younger children are supervised around water, roads, and recreational activities.

Students:
*Always wear a helmet when riding bikes, ATVs, or other recreational vehicles. (Remember to carry your ORV license and never ride un-supervised).
**Never swim alone and follow water safety rules.
***Stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
****Be responsible on social media and avoid sharing your location with strangers. (Limit your screen time and enjoy the outdoors).
*****If you see something suspicious or unsafe, tell a trusted adult or contact law enforcement.

Summer is a time to have fun, make memories, and stay safe. Working together, we can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable break.

Have a great summer and stay safe, Gogebic County! 🚔☀️🏖️

With walleye opener next weekend our local conservation officers asked if we could share this message about fishing on Lake Gogebic.

Last year the DNR proposed a slot limit on Lake Gogebic but it ultimately did not get approved. The regulations are the same as they’ve been for years: 5 fish over 15 inches. Feel free to pass the word!

During National Correctional Officers Week, we proudly recognize the dedicated Correctional Deputies and staff of the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office. Their hard work, professionalism, and commitment are essential to our office. The work done inside our jail is not easy. The individuals who come through our doors often present significant challenges, and our correctional staff meet those challenges each day with patience, professionalism, and compassion. Their ability to maintain safety and security while treating people with dignity reflects our values and the best of public service.

Working in a corrections setting can be a stressful and, at times, a thankless job, but it is important work that makes a real difference in Gogebic County. We are grateful for the dedication these men and women show every day in service to Gogebic County.

Please join me in thanking this outstanding group for all they do.

UPDATE:

Dog's have reunited with owner(s).

Anyone missing two pups? We were unable to detain as they're runners... Last location was on North Moore in Bessemer, near Parker Lane, past the river. They were headed north.

Our office has taken several recent reports of scammers targeting people via their computers and attempting to get them to send money by various means. These contacts often occur via a noisy pop-up in your internet browser, telling you that your computer has been infected with a virus and to call a number (or else!), after you've clicked a link or a bad advertisement you've inadvertently viewed. These scammers still also target people through email as well.

Do not give them your personal or banking information. Do not approve random requests for permissions and let them have remote access to your computer. Don't let them talk you into going to the bank or wiring money to them in a manner you don't normally do. Your relative isn't in a random jail cell. The police aren't coming to arrest you. If you feel uncomfortable with the conversation, hang up and notify law enforcement. If your computer is being wonky, disconnect it from the internet, shut it down, and bring it to someone who can diagnose it for you.

The bottom line is you are in control, at first. You give them control when you call the number on your screen and start the interaction. Don't do that. If the "repair" conversation does start try not to let them fluster you into doing something hasty. Pause and make a phone call to friends, family, or law enforcement for assistance. Someone you trust, not some random online. If you go the bank and the staff tell you not to do something don't give them a hard time. They see this stuff more often than they like and are trying to help you keep your money yours!

There is no shame in asking for help!
