One month from today, I'll be at North Riverside's Commons Park, celebrating the monarch butterfly. But why is the monarch so significant, especially at this time of the year? Because this is the migration season, and it represents a journey of resilience.

I’m pleased to share that HB 2955 has officially been signed into law.

Governor JB Pritzker signed my legislation creating the PFAS Wastewater Citizen Protection Committee, strengthening our efforts to protect Illinois’ water from dangerous, long-lasting chemicals.

HB 2955 tasks the committee with developing a PFAS Action Plan to address the monitoring, mitigation, and elimination of PFAS in the state's wastewater systems, and with identifying how to pay for that work so the costs also fall on the manufacturers that produce PFAS rather than on just wastewater agencies, taxpayers, and ratepayers. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are widely used, break down slowly, and contaminate water and soil, making them an ongoing risk to Illinois communities.

For decades, corporations have polluted the water our families depend on and left communities to pay for the damage. That has to change.

Access to safe, clean water is a basic human right. This new law gives Illinois a path forward to protect our water and hold polluters accountable.

This law moves Illinois closer to cleaner water, greater accountability for polluters, and stronger protections for communities across our state.
