Alderman Richard E. Leja -3rd Ward

Alderman Richard E. Leja -3rd Ward This page is only for me to disseminate information. Hello fellow 3rd Ward neighbors and Facebook friends! Thank you for visiting my page.

I hope to connect with you in person sometime soon. I humbly serve our community as your 3rd Ward Alderman for the City of Berwyn. I was sworn in May 11, 2021, and have enjoyed and learned so much since. I am currently the Chair for the City’s Fire & Police Committee and aldermanic member of the Administration Committee and Budget, Finance, & Revenue Committee. I love meeting ward members and regu

larly pay visits to new residents along with my wife of 50 years, Patricia. Having an informed ward is important to me, and I make every attempt to ensure new neighbors have the information they need to navigate city services, such as the New Resident packet or When Permits Are Needed. Public safety and continued public engagement is a large part of my focus. I am the chairman of the Fire and Police Committee where I have been the constituents’ voice in prioritizing safe neighborhoods. I have built strong ties and support from the police and fire departments, who recognize my commitment to keeping Berwyn safe. When I took office I had to contend with residents complaining of crime, violence, and even shootings in the 3rd ward. We have come a long way from that now and my work continues. Working with the police, parents, teachers, and attending most D100 School Board Meetings led me to discover we were dangerously low on crossing guards. With the blessing of the mayor and help from the Berwyn Marketing Department, I created an initiative to raise awareness of our Crossing Guards and their diminished numbers, while promoting recruitment. Within one year I raised our Crossing Guard count by over 50% which improved safety for our children & families traveling to and from school significantly. I put forward a proclamation on the council every year, designating May as Crossing Guard Month in Berwyn. In 2026 I helped improve our Guards pay. During my campaigning as alderman, many residents identified the boom of the rodent population as a community health problem, an issue propagated from the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Together with ward leaders, we initiated the 3rd Ward monthly Community clean-ups, the first for the 3rd Ward. There is much more work to accomplish in the ward and I enthusiastically look forward to doing so together.

PROPOSED BNSF RAILROAD CROSSING IMPROVEMENTS PUBLIC MEETING, last week.
The meeting was a good start. I was able to turn in concerns and questions from some of the 3rd ward residents as well as speak to the BNSF representatives about needed maintenance on the little train stations on Stanley/Oak Pk and Stanley/Harlem.
