Clarke County, Virginia

Clarke County, Virginia This is the official Clarke County, Virginia, page. It is the eighth smallest county in Virginia.

Clarke County is 178-square miles (113,920 acres) of fertile farmland, thriving businesses, residential neighborhoods, the Blue Ridge Mountains with 22 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and the Shenandoah River (21.6 miles). Its seat, Berryville, sits at the intersection of U.S. 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) and Va. 7 (Harry Byrd Highway). Berryville is the center of commercial, residential, institutio

nal, and industrial activity for the county. The state Senate established Clarke County on March 8, 1836, when it was separated from Frederick County. It is named for George Rogers Clark (no “e”), a Virginian who became the highest-ranking American military officer on the northwestern frontier during the American Revolutionary War. Today, Clarke County (population 14,500) remains primarily a rural, agricultural county, continuing a tradition begun in colonial times.

Pet of the Week: Zeus is a 6-year-old German Shepherd/hound mix. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but it doesn't take long for him to warm up—especially if you happen to have a treat in hand!

One of Zeus's favorite activities is swimming, so he'd love a family that enjoys spending time outdoors and making a splash. He appears to do well with other dogs, though a meet and greet is required to ensure a good fit.

Zeus is up-to-date on all shots and is microchipped. His adoption fee is $50.

If you can give Zeus a good life, please complete a pre-adoption application: www.clarkecounty.gov/government/animal-control-shelter

For more information or to visit Zeus, contact the Clarke Animal Shelter at (540) 955-5104 or [email protected] located at 225 Ramsburg Lane, Berryville, VA 22611.

06/01/2026

Despite significant precipitation across the Commonwealth in recent days, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in coordination with the Drought Monitoring Task Force (DMTF) continued the existing drought advisory statuses for Virginia. All of Virginia is in a drought warning with the exception of Isle of Wight County in southeast Virginia, which remains in a drought watch. Recent storms greatly improved streamflow and upper soil moisture, with most localities receiving between two to four inches of rain on average. However, deeper soil moisture and groundwater remain much below normal.

In Clarke County, all 3 groundwater monitoring wells are still below the 10th percentile for this time of the year. The streamflow gages for Dry Marsh Run and Spout Run are below the 25th percentile and 10th percentile, respectively. Long-term outlooks for groundwater levels remain a concern and will take a prolonged period of rainfall to recover. There is no significant rainfall forecasted over the next 14 days and without significant rainfall, the drought could worsen as temperatures rise and rates of evapotranspiration increase.

Private well users are encouraged to engage in these voluntary water conservation efforts: https://www.clarkecounty.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/14703/639040913392970000
