FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Request for Public Assistance – Arrest Made in Indecent Exposure Investigation

On May 28, 2026, Deputies with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office responded to Clarke County Parks and Recreation, located on Al Smith Circle, for a report of indecent exposure. Prior to deputies arriving on scene, the suspect left the area in a vehicle. A description of the vehicle was broadcast to law enforcement units in the area.

Officers with the Berryville Police Department later located the suspect vehicle in the Martin’s Grocery Store parking lot on McNeil Drive.

Following interviews with victims and further investigation, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office arrested David John Michel, 83, of Battlefield Drive in Wi******er, Virginia. Mr. Michel was charged with the following offenses:

• Indecent Exposure – Virginia Code §18.2-387
• Obscene Sexual Display – Virginia Code §18.2-387.1

Mr. Michel was released from jail on a secured bond.

During the investigation, deputies developed information indicating there may have been additional witnesses or victims who observed similar behavior involving the suspect. The suspect operated a maroon 2018 Buick Encore bearing Virginia registration.

Anyone who witnessed this behavior or who may have additional information is asked to contact the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 540-955-1234 and reference Case #202600278.

Knowing that there were school activities taking place at the Clarke County Park on May 29, 2026 to celebrate the end of the school year, the Sheriff directed a Deputy to be present with the students and teachers during the celebration.

Mr. Michel is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
