Weโ€™re getting down to the last of our meet your firefighters!!!

Todayโ€™s featured employee is Lieutenant Josh Odom. Stop by and say hi to Josh! We appreciate his dedication to the citizens of Shawnee County!!

How long have you been a firefighter with the department?

I've been with Shawnee Heights Fire District for 13 years and have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of roles while growing both personally and professionally.

What inspired you to become a firefighter?
I've always enjoyed helping people and working with my hands. The fire service offered a unique combination of public service, teamwork, problem-solving, and continuous learning that really appealed to me.

What's the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part is helping people on what may be one of the worst days of their lives. I also enjoy mentoring newer firefighters and helping them build confidence and skills.

What's the most challenging part of the job?
Balancing the emotional side of the job can be challenging. We see people during difficult situations, and while we train to handle those moments professionally, they can still stay with you.

What's something the public would be surprised to learn about firefighters?
Most people are surprised by how much training we do. The public often sees us responding to emergencies, but a significant amount of our time is spent training, maintaining equipment, and preparing for situations before they happen.

Do you have a favorite call or a memorable moment that sticks with you?
One of the most memorable parts of this career isn't necessarily a single call, but the friendships and experiences shared with fellow firefighters. Working through difficult situations together creates bonds that last a lifetime.

How do you balance the demands of the job with family life?
Communication and quality time are important. The schedule can be demanding, so when I'm off duty, I try to be fully present with my family and make the most of the time we have together.

What's your favorite part about serving this community?
I enjoy serving a community that supports its fire department and takes pride in where they live. It's rewarding to help protect the people and neighborhoods we call home.

What is a hobby of yours outside work?
I'm heavily involved in drag racing and drag-and-drive events. I enjoy building, tuning, and racing cars with my wife and family, and I love the challenge of making a vehicle perform better while still being street-driven.

What message do you want to share with the community about your department?
Our firefighters genuinely care about this community and are committed to providing the best service possible. We train hard, work as a team, and take pride in being ready whenever someone calls for help.

What advice would you give to someone considering a fire service career?
Come into the fire service with a willingness to learn and a strong work ethic. Stay humble, ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity to improve your skills. The learning never stops.

Coffee or energy drink?
Dr Pepper!!!

June 6, 1944 โ€” D-Day

Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

More than 80 years ago, thousands of young men faced impossible odds, stepping into uncertainty and danger in defense of freedom. Many never returned home. Their bravery changed the course of history and secured liberties that generations have since enjoyed.

In the fire service, we understand the meaning of duty, service, and sacrifice. While our mission is different, the values that guided those soldiersโ€”selflessness, commitment to others, and the willingness to place the needs of the community above their ownโ€”remain ideals we strive to honor every day.

As we remember the heroes of D-Day, we also remember the families who endured the fear of waiting and the loss that followed. Their sacrifice is woven into the story of our nation and should never be forgotten.

Today, the members of Shawnee Heights Fire District respectfully honor the brave men who landed on the shores of Normandy and all who served during World War II. Their courage continues to inspire generations of Americans to answer the call when others need help most

At approximately 1830 hrs, your Shawnee Heights Fire District firefighters were dispatched to a water rescue at Lake Shawnee involving a capsized sailboat, that was reported approximately 200 yards off the shore.

Thanks to a quick, coordinated effort between your Shawnee Heights firefighters, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office, and Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Police, crews were able to safely assist the occupant and get the boat back to the shoreline.

We are incredibly happy to report that nobody was injured in this incident. After getting the sailor to safety, the boat was successfully placed upright, and was actually able to sail off into the sunset (pun intended).

The incident was caused by a mechanical failure of a rigging system.

Excellent teamwork today by all responding agencies to ensure a safe and happy ending!

Shawnee Heights Fire District recently ran a medical call in which we had difficulty finding the house due to a worn out address marker on the mailbox.

REMEMBER!!! If we canโ€™t find you, we canโ€™t help you. Please ensure your numbers are large enough and clear enough to be read from a distance.

Please consider purchasing a reflective address sign from us for a nominal fee and makes finding you so much easier. These can be purchased at any of our stations.

Over 200 firefighters from at least 52 counties and 7 states left their jobs, families, and traveled hundreds of miles to help protect the life and property of those in Clark, Meade, and Morton Counties. Join us in thanking these dedicated firefighters who represented these counties and states for all their hard work.

Firefighters from Anderson, Barber, Barton, Brown, Butler, Camanche, Cherokee, Clark, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellis, Finney, Ford, Geary, Grant, Gray, Greenwood, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Kearny, Kiowa, Kingman, Labette, Lane, Lincoln, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Meade, Miami, Mitchell, Montgomery, Morton, Ness, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Rush, Saline, Scott, Sedgwick, Seward, Shawnee, Stanton, Stevens, Sumner, and Wyandotte.

Engine crews and additional support also came from Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Wyoming.

Many in Clark, Meade, and Morton Counties have a long road ahead of them. As this phase of the fire ends, please continue to keep these communities in your thoughts and support those rebuilding in its aftermath. The strength, resilience, and generosity shown over the past week are a powerful reminder that in times of crisis, neighbors helping neighbors make all the difference.

On his way home from the fire area, Southeast District Fire Management Officer Aaron Williams captured a striking rainbow stretching across the sky in Clark County. After days of smoke, exhaustion, and difficult fire conditions, the image felt like a fitting reminder of this past week. Storms eventually give way to clearer skies, and even in the hardest moments, there are signs of hope and resilience ahead.

Earlier this month, we were fortunate enough to host the Shawnee Heights Elementary School 1st graders. The joy on their faces and the thank you messages are what keep us motivated to be the best fire department in Shawnee County. See you next year, have a great summer!
