Bernardston Police Department, Massachusetts

Bernardston Police Department, Massachusetts Welcome to the Bernardston Police Department's page. We are the primary law enforcement agency for the Town.

We are a small rural police force consisting of four full time officers; Chief, Sergeant, two Patrolmen, and several part-time officers. We are located in the northern section of Franklin County, Massachusetts and border the State of Vermont. We investigate all crimes, enforce motor vehicle violations and have the ability to respond to all types of calls. We work in coordination with the Northwest

ern District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit for larger, major crimes. We oversee our Animal Control Department with assistance from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, who provide a shelter for unknown or loose dogs. Our major equipment includes the police cruiser fleet. We have five police cruisers; 2022 Dodge Durango PPV, 2019 Chevy Tahoe PPV, 2018 Dodge Durango SSV, 2016 Dodge Charger, and a 2014 Ford Police Utility. The full-time personnel have assigned cruisers, which makes for faster responses and extends the service life of the cruiser to 6-8 years. Other emergency equipment includes but not limited to; a Polaris 4-wheeler ATV (4x4), a Snowmobile, and a Rescue Sled. In the event we need to transport our rescue equipment throughout town or for a mutual aid response, we have a fully enclosed trailer which has the ability to house all of our equipment. Other misc specialty equipment pieces are night vision and thermal imaging. In 2007, the Town built a new public safety complex, which is where we are stationed. The safety complex also houses an office for the Emergency Management Director and the Bernardston Highway Superintendent. We are extremely grateful for such an investment from the Town residents and to all the Town Hall staff that made this happen. We recently conducted training with surrounding law enforcement agencies, including fire department personnel to incorporate a county law enforcement ATV rescue team. We also completed training to be certified ground pounders and seeking certification for land navigation. We feel this training would be invaluable due to our location and terrain.

A section of Greenfield Road will be temporarily closed. A detour down South County Road, until later this evening, is set up. This is due to a rollover accident investigation.

ATTN: There have been several incidents reported lately of some men going door to door offering to do paving work from excess product not used on another job. This is a common scam and should be reported immediately. Anyone soliciting door to door should have a permit with the town/PD. Please call to verify ANY solicitors.

*** Attention Bernardston and Leyden Residents ***

THANK YOU for your continuous support. In the past, we’ve purchased Chevy Tahoes for police cruisers, but couldn’t resist this deal on a New Cadillac Escalade!!! So much nicer than the Tahoe…

We didn’t get permission prior to purchasing, so if anyone is upset we’re simply asking for forgiveness. The best $150,000 we could have spent of your hard earned tax money.

Respectfully,

ATTN: Northern Tree will be out all next week (Monday 23 thru Friday 27) doing much needed trimming around the power lines. They will likely have some large machinery, including a crane, and will possibly cause some traffic delays. PLEASE plan accordingly if you are traveling on Eden Trail, Fox Hill or West Mountain Rd.

As we look ahead to the new year, we want to thank everyone in the communities of both Leyden and Bernardston for their support in 2025. Over the last year we have responded to a wide mixture of calls. Many, thankfully, were pleasant encounters, but some unfortunately were not. A quick rundown of the last year:

BPD conducted 1084 traffic stops ranging from warnings to citations to arrests. We stopped 345 speeders, 81 vehicles that swerved over the lines, 84 vehicles that were unregistered and/or uninsured. We took several people off the road for operating under the influence. We were able to stop 24 people who did not possess a valid license to drive (be it unlicensed or suspended). We responded to numerous car accidents including 35 that resulted in significant damage.

We had several incidents in town that included a home that had fi****ms stolen (the two offenders have been caught), assaults, domestic assaults, larceny, fi****ms charges, animal cruelty and breaking and entering. Thankfully many of these crimes resulted in charges for the offenders thanks to the hardwork of our officers and our many partners throughout the law enforcement community.

It is our honor to serve the towns we cover and we look forward to another great year with hopefully fewer accidents.

*** Annual Toy Drive *** 🧸🚂🚲🏀

Kiwanis Club of Bernardston will be on deck with their delicious pancake 🥞 breakfast too! We hope to see you all there.

Thank you for your continuous support

Save The Date: Saturday December 6th!

It’s that time of year again for the annual Toy Drive. Your Bernardston Firefighters will once again be teaming up with the Bernardston Police Department, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at the United Church of Bernardston. We are looking for donations of new (unwrapped) toys for all ages of children here in the community. This has always been a great turnout for a great cause. The Kiwanis Club of Bernardston will also be hosting their pancake breakfast at the church where Santa may be making an appearance! We hope to see you all again! Thank you.

PSA: There have been several incidents recently in our area of checks being stolen from the mail. The checks are then signed over to another party and cashed at a bank. We strongly advise everyone who is mailing a check, money order or any type of payment to drop it off into a secure blue bin at your local post office rather than in your personal mailbox. While this is inconvenient, we ask you to take the extra step to protect yourself.

Opposition to House Bill 1923
Raising the Age to 21: A Well-Intentioned but Misguided Step

The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association has submitted testimony opposing House Bill 1923, which would raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction to 21.

While the bill aims to promote better outcomes for youth, it would create major challenges for public safety, campus investigations, and accountability. At 18, individuals can vote, serve in the military, sign contracts, and even sit on a jury to determine someone else’s guilt, yet under this proposal, they would not be fully responsible for their own criminal actions.

Massachusetts already provides extensive diversion and rehabilitation opportunities for young adults, and data show that very few 18- to 21-year-olds receive convictions for minor offenses. Expanding the juvenile system to include this population is unnecessary, costly, and operationally impractical.
