ARE YOU A VETERAN?

There are two veterans’ exemption that property owners may qualify for. The first exemption is the 4,000.00 Veterans exemption. This exemption can be used on any real property they own and it can also be applied to the registration on their vehicle. Any Sandoval County veteran who served a minimum of 90 consecutive active duty days (other than for training), and who was honorably discharged, and is a legal resident of New Mexico qualifies for a $4,000 reduction in the taxable value of their real property for Sandoval County taxation purposes. This benefit is also available to non-remarried surviving spouses of veterans who would have otherwise qualified for this benefit.

The second exemption is the 100 percent disabled veteran property tax exemption available to any veteran who has been rated at 100 percent service-connected disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and who is a legal resident of New Mexico. This exemption grants a 100 percent property tax waiver on their primary residence. Recent legislative statutory changes that Sandoval County supported allowed this exemption to be applied to special assessments as well thus truly exempting the 100% disabled veteran from all real property taxes.

Veterans are encouraged to apply for these benefits before April 30, 2018 in order to receive the exemption for tax year 2018.
Both of these benefits require the veteran to bring the original tax waiver certificate issued by the New Mexico Veteran Services Department (NMDVS) into the Assessor’s office. If residents feel they are eligible for either of these benefits, they can contact the NMDVS directly at 1-866-433-8387, or come to our office.

“It breaks my heart when a veteran comes into our office who is eligible for these benefits but never knew about them. These men and women have earned these benefits and we need reach as many veterans as we can. We need to honor these men and women and ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten. I am excited to partner with the Veteran Services Department to accomplish this goal,” said Chief Deputy Assessor, Christie Humphrey.

LET’S SUPPORT OUR HOME TEAM!! The Bernalillo Boys Basketball Team are District Champs and playing in the State Championship this week. The Spartans will play St. Michaels on March 7th @ 8:15 pm at Santa Ana Star Center.

We have many wonderful employees in the Sandoval County Assessor’s Office. Not only do they work hard every day for the citizens of Sandoval County, but many give back to the community after work. Gerred Prairie is one of those individuals that is an amazing mentor and incredible coach to the young men in our community. I would like to introduce him to you:

My name is Gerred Prairie. I have been employed with Sandoval County for the past 17 years. I assist taxpayers daily with questions and concerns regarding their assessments. As an employee of the county, I felt the need to give back to the community in an area that I felt has help me grow into the person that I am today. I enjoyed playing high school basketball and I feel that it had a huge impact on my life.

I have had the pleasure of coaching Bernalillo High School basketball for the past 15 years. I am proud to say, that the coach that coached me in high school leads the basketball program today. I am grateful to be an assistant coach to Terry Darnell. He is one of the greatest high school coaches in New Mexico. Not only has he been a great mentor but he has also become one of my closest friends.

As a high school coach I have the privilege to work with an amazing group of talented student athletes. These young men strive to be gentleman on and off the court. We strive to work together as a team. Our goal as coaches is to help these young men grow and to teach them the characteristics needed to be successful in all areas of life. We instill in them what it means to give back to the community and be involved in any way they can. As a result to all this I am proud to say this year Bernalillo Boys Spartan basketball team is 27-1 entering the Quarterfinals of 2018 State Basketball Tournament and also Back to Back District Champs in class 4A District 5.

It is my privilege to be able to give back to the county in a way that I feel so passionate about. I work towards the goal to be the very best role model I can be for each one of them. I feel it is important to lead by example. I believe that with our accountability to each other, as coaches and as a team, we strive to be better than we were yesterday. We have a common goal to be better citizens on our team, in our schools, and in our community.
