The Uniting Church in Australia joyfully congratulates The Rt Revd Sarah Mullally, named today the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Bishop Mullally makes history as the first woman to serve in this globally significant role within the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.

In a statement tonight, Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli writes:

"This is an affirmation of our deep and long-held belief that the gifts and call of the Holy Spirit are poured out freely, without boundary or restriction of gender, for the leadership of Christ’s church. This appointment is a powerful witness that Christ’s body cannot be whole without the love, vision, dedication, leadership and giftedness of women."

I’m deeply angered and saddened by the brutal attack in Grand Blanc. Targeting innocent people gathered in worship is a cowardly act that strikes at the heart of our freedoms. I honor those who lost their lives and commend the local officers whose quick action prevented even greater tragedy. We train to protect our communities and stand ready to support civil authorities, but true security also comes from vigilance and unity among all of us. My thoughts are with the families and the entire congregation as they face the hard road of healing.
