Incident Information Release

3/17/2026

East Holmes Fire & EMS was dispatched at 12:43 PM to Holmes Custom Moulding 5093 CR 120 for a structure fire with an explosion. Our first arriving units were on scene at 12:44 and requested additional Ambulances to respond due to having multiple burn victims. A Medical helicopter was requested however they were not able to respond to the scene due to the weather. 6 patients were treated and transported to hospitals ( 2 to Akron Childrens Hospital & 4 to Pomerene Hospital). The dust explosion was caused by sparks that entered the sawdust collection system due to a malfunctioning belt sander. The explosion caused extensive damage to the building and dust collection system including the sawdust silos. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 5 hrs until we had the last of the hotspots extinguished throughout the building and dust system. We were assisted by our mutual aid partners Winesburg Volunteer Fire & EMS, Holmes Fire District #1

At 6:51 PM Sunday evening, crews were dispatched to a large mulch pile on fire. The main pile consisted of approximately 400 semi loads of mulch that had ignited due to spontaneous combustion. High winds made firefighting efforts challenging, and heavy smoke from the fire reduced visibility to near zero, forcing the closure of State Route 39 for a period of time. After several hours of operations, the fire was successfully contained shortly after 11:00 PM. We appreciate the hard work of all emergency personnel involved and thank the community for their patience during the incident. We appreciate the assistance of our mutual aid partners, Winesburg Volunteer Fire & EMS, Holmes Fire District #1, Sugarcreek Fire & Rescue, Baltic Fire & Rescue, Prairie Twp Fire Dept-Holmesville, Killbuck Twp Fire & EMS, Holmes County Sheriff's Dept.

At 2:40 this morning we were dispatched to a structure fire on CR 207. On arrival we had a fully involved building with roof collapse and several other buildings nearby. We focused our efforts on saving the surrounding buildings and the large amount of lumber that was stacked up against the outside of the building. The extreme cold temperatures proved challenging in preventing hose lines and trucks from freezing up. A 2nd alarm was activated to bring additional trucks needed for shuttling water to the fire scene. Thank you to our mutual aid partners for assistance Winesburg Volunteer Fire & EMS, Sugarcreek Fire & Rescue, Holmes Fire District #1, Prairie Twp Fire Dept-Holmesville also to Holmes County Highway Department for bringing salt to treat all the ice covered roadways and fire scene area.
