Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers - UMATR - Wild & Scenic Committee

Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers - UMATR - Wild & Scenic Committee In Dec. 2014, the Upper Missisquoi & Trout Rivers (UMATR) became VT’s 1st federally designated Wild & Scenic River!

UMATR flows 46.1 miles through 8 towns: Westfield, Troy, North Troy, Richford, Berkshire, Enosburg, Enosburgh Falls & Montgomery in Vermont The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was established by Congress in 1968 “to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations”. In December of 2014, Vermont joined the list of states containing federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, when an extensive multi-year study of the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers culminated in a congressional designation.

Thinking of joining the UMATR Committee? Look no further! As a Committee Member, not only would you get to represent your town on the Wild & Scenic Committee to decide how to spend federal dollars throughout the region, you would also have the opportunity to join committee only events.

On Sunday, UMATR staff and Committee Members were joined by Vermont State Lands Ecologist Danielle Owczarski to go on a tour of Big Falls State Natural Area and Big Falls Flats.

It was a fun and educational outing!

Another great on water event books!

On Saturday, we hosted our third and final canoe paddle lessons with NEK Guides.

It was a great day to learn paddling skills in North Troy starting at Big Falls Eddy Park and getting out at our new river access point two miles downstream 😄

It has been great to test out our paddle skills this summer 🛶🛶🛶

Thank you to Parker and his crew!

Wednesday night, we gathered at Big Falls Eddy Park for a nature paddle with our Orleans and Franklin County Foresters Jared Nunery and Charlie Hancock.

It was a beautiful evening of observing the nature around us and learning from our expert guides.

We managed to get rained on at the very end of our paddle but spirits remained high.

Thank you to our County Foresters and event attendees!
