Robert T. Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service The Matsui Center honors Robert T. Matsui, a graduate of UC Berkeley, who provided inspiration to many through his dedicated service in Congress. The Robert T.

Matsui served 26 years as a representative for Sacramento and California's Fifth Congressional district. Matsui Center for Politics & Public Service engages Cal students in public life through internships, public events, and the presence of distinguished campus visitors. In this way, the Center serves as a fitting legacy to Congressman Robert T. Matsui and his belief that public service is a noble

profession that should be open to all, a commitment that made him one of California's most important and respected political figures for more than three decades. The Center is strictly nonpartisan.

Want to learn how you can turn your interest in public service into hands-on experience? Join GenEq, QARC, and the IGS Matsui Center on September 23rd, 2026 for an afternoon focused on public service opportunities at IGS Matsui Center!

One week until our Pathways to Federal Public Service Info Session! 🇺🇸 Before you apply, here's a look at what our inaugural cohort of Pathways fellows got to experience during their time in DC. 👇

While interning at public service offices ranging from Sen. Adam Schiff, Rep. John Garamendi, Rep. Doris Matsui, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), and the Department of Energy's Office of Multilateral Affairs, our fellows still found time to build community: meeting members of Congress, exploring the art and culture of Washington, DC, catching Broadway shows, boat rides, group dinners, and even a night out at Medieval Times! Pathways fellows don't just intern on the Hill, they build community and connections that last well beyond the summer.

Are you a UC Berkeley undergrad who wants to be a change-maker at the federal level? Join us in 2 weeks at the Matsui Center's Pathways to Federal Public Service Info Session to learn how you can spend spring and summer 2027 in Washington, DC, in collaboration with the UC Berkeley CalInTheCapital program.

The Pathways to Federal Public Service Fellowship pairs spring coursework on federal politics and policymaking with a 9-week summer residency and public service internship in DC, complete with free housing and a living stipend.

Open to all majors and class years, including graduating seniors and transfer students, as long as you're also accepted into the Cal in the Capital (CITC) Program for Spring 2027.

Our inaugural 2026 Pathways to Federal Public Service Fellows are making the most of their summer in Washington, D.C.! 🇺🇸 This week, Executive Director Christine Trost stopped by to catch up with the cohort, hear about their internship experiences, and celebrate all they've accomplished so far (with a well-earned ice cream break 🍦). We're especially grateful to Representative Doris Matsui for her vision and support in helping us launch this program, and taking time to meet with our fellows! From building skills, confidence, and community in our nation's capital, these students are gaining firsthand experience in what public service looks like, and we're excited to see where this journey takes them. We're so proud of this incredible group and look forward to cheering them on throughout the rest of the summer.
