They didn’t want a revolution. But that’s what it took. 🕊️
This fall marks the 50th anniversary of UC Berkeley’s Women’s Studies Program.

The program was born from a student-led movement calling for a more inclusive curriculum and faculty roster.

In 1970, only 2 percent of UC Berkeley’s professors were women. In the comparative literature curriculum, women authors were woefully underrepresented.

“Something has to change,” Gloria Bowles Ph.D. ’76 recalled.

The Free Speech Movement Café is back! ☕️🥪🥐

Starting today, swing by for coffee, sandwiches, and sweet treats (chocolate banana bundt cake, anyone?) — and feast your eyes on the newly expanded space.

Plus: Browse photos on the walls documenting the Free Speech Movement, hand-selected by people who were there.

🏛: With its striking Beaux-Arts Classical features, the Doe Library sits at the core of the UC Berkeley historic campus. Following the “Athens of the West” campus master plan drafted by Émile Bénard, architecture professor and university architect John Galen Howard designed over twenty buildings over the course of his career.
The immense North reading room takes up the entire height of the Doe library’s monumental facade, which at the time of construction was immediately facing the campus main entrance. It recently underwent a careful restoration bringing it back to its 1910 state, complete with historic furniture and facsimile original table lamps.

Lock in, twin: Moffitt Library is officially back! 🌱🐻🎉🫶

Today, the newly reimagined library opened its doors.

✨ Meet the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning at Moffitt Library! ✨

As one student succinctly said: “My best friend is back 💗”

Welcome home, besties! 🐻🫶

1. The first student visitors enter the renovated Moffitt Library on Monday, Aug. 24.

2. Two staff members high-five as visitors pour in.

3. Within minutes of opening, students snagged spots in the poppy-colored study booths on the third floor.

4. Students are treated to cookies and other goodies.

A new chapter for Moffitt Library begins next week. 💙💛

On Monday, UC Berkeley students will return to a transformed Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning at Moffitt Library — with nearly double the space to study, create, and collaborate. 📚✨

Shaped by years of student input, the reimagined lower three floors include quiet zones and areas to gather in groups. There's an expanded maker studio and Free Speech Movement Café, as well as spaces devoted to discovery and reflection.

The reopening marks the culmination of years of planning, partnership, and philanthropy, and a new beginning for one of Berkeley's most beloved student spaces. 🐻

The wait for Moffitt is almost over! 🌱🗓️🐻

In 12 days, the reimagined library reopens, offering:

👩🏻‍💻 More study spaces
🔌 Loads of outlets
🛋️ New furniture
🌞 More natural light
✨ Immaculate vibes

Mark your calendars for 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24 — Moffitt's grand reopening!

What are you looking forward to when the library — a favorite among Bears — reopens? ⤵️

1. The Pan Family Lounge, on Floor 3, has comfortable seating, flowery walls, and a rose color scheme.

2. Floor 2 is a lively and active “buzz” floor, perfect for collaboration and connection. Furniture, such as this large sectional, reflects the spirit of the space.

3. Floor 2 was once a staff-only floor. It now has abundant spaces to study, from tables to study booths with controllable lighting.

4. A dynamic learning studio on Floor 2 hosts workshops, events, and other interactive programs throughout the year.

5. Floor 1 is a “hush” floor, ideal for quiet solo study, with ample seating options and a reflection room. In the background, a new staircase makes it easy to move between the first two floors.

6. Near the portal from the Main (Gardner) Stacks, an arrow points to the reimagined Moffitt Library.
