The City of Berkeley, California was incorporated in 1878 and was policed by an elected town Marshall. The Marshall was assisted by elected Constables who throughout the years primarily served papers and seldom made arrests without a warrant. At the turn of the century, crime increased and...

In 1905, August Vollmer was elected town Marshall. In 1909, he was appointed as the City of Berkeley's f

irst Chief of Police. Chief Vollmer was instrumental in organizing the department, creating what we now call a "Code of Ethics", which included eliminating the acceptance of gratuities, rewards or favors." Chief Vollmer demanded a high level of honesty, efficiency, interest and hard work from his officers. This has continued to this day, which has been the foundation for BPD's reputation in the law enforcement field. Chief Vollmer's progressive thinking and use of new innovations in law enforcement became the foundation that BPD has been built upon and provided a legacy as a department that can be called "First in Policing" in so many areas.

Yesterday morning, members of the Berkeley Police Department attended the Alameda County Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony to honor the law enforcement officers who gave their lives in service to their communities.

We were especially honored to be joined by the family of Berkeley Police Sergeant Jimmie Rutledge, who was killed in the line of duty in 1973. Their presence served as a powerful reminder that the sacrifice of our fallen officers is never forgotten.

The Berkeley Police Department remains committed to honoring the legacy and service of our fallen officers and all peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month—a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of AAPI communities across our nation and here in our own community.

We honor the generations who have helped shape our neighborhoods, businesses, public service, and cultural life. We also reaffirm our commitment to building trust, fostering inclusion, and ensuring the safety and dignity of all residents.

Our department stands alongside our AAPI community members today and every day. We are dedicated to listening, learning, and working together to create a safer, more connected community for everyone.

Good news: this stolen vehicle was safely returned to its owner this afternoon.

At about 3:41 pm today, officers received a Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) alert indicating the vehicle had entered Berkeley via College Avenue. It had just been reported stolen out of Oakland earlier in the day.

Before attempting a traffic stop, our bike officers got a good look at the driver. When officers attempted a traffic stop shortly thereafter, the driver sped off.

While officers did not pursue the vehicle, they saturated the area to look for it—later finding it abandoned on Berkeley Way near Sacramento Street.

After searching the area, officers located and arrested the suspect without further incident.
