BERKELEY HEIGHTS POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE

On September 5, 2026, at approximately 9:21 p.m., the Berkeley Heights Police Department responded to a residence after a resident reported an incident involving an unknown male who had been allowed into the home to use the restroom.

Once inside, the male entered the bathroom, turned off the lights, and attempted to hide from the homeowners and responding police officers. Berkeley Heights Police Officers located the individual and took appropriate action to resolve the situation safely.

This incident reminds our community: Do not allow individuals you do not know into your home. If someone you do not know approaches your residence and needs assistance, keep your doors secured and contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department if necessary.

Public Statement – Mary Kay McMillin Traffic & Pedestrian Safety

We are aware of the traffic and pedestrian safety concerns surrounding Mary Kay McMillin Early Childhood Center and are actively working to address them.

Last month, the Township requested a meeting with School District officials to review these concerns. That meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, when I will meet with Township and School District officials to review current conditions and determine what additional measures we can implement until the planned roadway improvements on Mountain Avenue are completed.

In the meantime, Berkeley Heights Police Officers will continue to be present during school drop-off and pick-up to assist with traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

We appreciate everyone’s patience, cooperation, and continued attention to safety as we work together to protect our students and families.

RECENT SCAM EMAILS:

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS AND DEVELOPERS APPLYING TO THE
ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT OR PLANNING BOARD

Recently some individuals involved in Zoning or Planning Board applications have
reported receiving suspicious emails and letters of unpaid invoices and requesting wire transfers. These emails and letters appear to come from the Township of Berkeley Heights but are not legitimate.

For example, a resident recently received a fraudulent email from someone
impersonating a Township employee. The email requested payment by wire transfer.

Please be advised that wire transfers are a red flag; the Township of Berkeley
Heights will never request a wire transfer related to a Board application.

(We will always request a check made payable to THE TOWNSHIP OF BERKELEY
HEIGHTS which will be deposited into an escrow account and used to pay the Board professionals. Invoices are paid by the Township Land Use Administrator from escrow accounts. The applicant or developer will never pay the invoice themselves.)

TRAFFIC ALERT

Glenside Road at Glenside Avenue will be closed in the northbound lanes today from approximately 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM for some back-to-school roadway improvements.

Please plan an alternate route.

I-78 Eastbound entrance ramp is currently closed from Diamond Hill Road due to a motor vehicle accident. The closure is expected to last about 6–8 hours.

Please avoid the area, expect significant delays, and seek an alternate route.

Darrin Chambers of Maverick’s Legacy visited the Berkeley Heights Police Department on Wednesday and generously donated LifeVac devices for our frontline patrol vehicles.

Members of our DPW, Recreation Department, Library, Township offices, and Berkeley Heights Public Schools also joined us for a demonstration and the opportunity to learn how to use these lifesaving devices.

Thank you, Darrin, for your family’s continued commitment to building Maverick’s legacy and helping save lives in his memory. Maverick is certainly leaving a lasting footprint in our community and beyond.

Berkeley Heights Police Investigating Vehicle Burglaries and Suspicious Activity

The Berkeley Heights Police Department is investigating several recent incidents involving vehicles.

Overnight, several commercial vehicles parked in the Industrial Road area were burglarized. Over the weekend, officers also responded to an attempted motor vehicle burglary on Bristol Court and a suspicious incident on Raleigh Court. In both weekend incidents, the individuals were unsuccessful, and no property was taken.

The Berkeley Heights Police Department Detective Bureau is actively investigating these incidents and whether they may be related.

Residents and businesses are reminded to remain vigilant, lock all vehicles, remove valuables and key fobs, and ensure exterior lighting and security cameras are operating properly.

Anyone who observed suspicious activity, has surveillance footage, or has information that may assist with the investigation is asked to contact Sergeant Anthony Triguero at [email protected] or the Berkeley Heights Police Department at 908-464-1111.
