🚨 WHERE DO YOU CHARGE YOUR PHONE? 🚨

Many people charge their phones on beds, couches, or even under pillows—especially at night.

While modern phones and chargers have built-in safety features, charging on soft surfaces can trap heat and reduce ventilation.

🔥 Why does this matter?

Pillows, blankets, and mattresses are combustible materials. If a charger, cable, battery, or device develops a fault, the trapped heat can increase the risk of overheating and potentially start a fire.

⚠️ The risk becomes higher when using:
❌ Damaged charging cables
❌ Counterfeit or low-quality chargers
❌ Damaged or swollen batteries
❌ Devices covered by blankets or pillows while charging

✅ Charge safely:
• Place devices on a hard, stable surface
• Use original or certified chargers
• Replace damaged cables immediately
• Keep charging devices away from bedding and other combustibles
• Install working smoke alarms in your home

💡 Fire Safety Reminder:
A phone charger should not normally ignite bedding by itself. However, faulty equipment, damaged batteries, and trapped heat can create dangerous conditions that increase fire risk.

A simple change in charging habits can help keep your home and family safe. 🚒🔥

🚒 Thank you to Chief Mark Russo of the Warren Fire Department and Mount Mt. Bethel Fire Company for loaning BHFD a 3,500-gallon portable drafting pond so our Training Division can conduct drafting drills.
💧 Drafting is a critical firefighting skill used to establish a continuous, high-volume water supply when municipal fire hydrants are unavailable, out of service, or located too far from the emergency scene. By utilizing portable water sources such as ponds, tanks, or tanker shuttle operations, firefighters can ensure an adequate water supply for fire suppression operations.
📍 During drafting operations, the fire pump removes air from the suction hose and pump chamber, creating a vacuum (negative pressure). Atmospheric pressure acting on the water's surface then forces water up through the suction hose and into the pump, where it can be delivered to attack lines and master streams.
🔹 Training on these operations helps ensure our members remain proficient in establishing reliable water supplies in areas where hydrants may not be readily available.

🧑‍🚒 Firefighters (L to R) FFs Wyatt Manning, James Rubino, Ryan Tomich, Jeremy Siksnius, and Nicholas Domingos recently completed the Truck Company Operations course at the Middlesex County Fire Academy. This 18-hour course provides firefighters with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate effectively as part of a Truck Company (Ladder Company) and serves as Part 2 of the 4-section Firefighter III Program.
➡️ Continuing education remains a critical part of the fire service, helping firefighters maintain certifications, develop new skills, and expand their knowledge across various aspects of emergency response. Training such as this also strengthens decision-making abilities, reinforces teamwork, and enhances operational effectiveness on the fire ground.

🌡️ It's getting hot in here! If you're breaking out the air conditioner to beat the heat, remember that ACs and other heavy appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet -- not an extension cord or power strip. On Saturday morning, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department and the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad were dispatched to the Watchung Reservation for a 911 call reporting a hiker on the History Trail suffering a medical emergency. Due to the remote location on a hiking trail, Rescue-1 and Ranger-1 were dispatched to assist with access to the patient.

Fire Department and Rescue Squad members, along with Atlantic Mobile Health Paramedics and the Union County Police Department, worked together to locate, treat, and safely remove the patient from the trail. Crews successfully effected the rescue and transported the patient to the awaiting ambulance on Sky Top Road in under an hour. The patient was then transported to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
