BVAC was proud to participate in Bergenfield’s Family Fun Day, providing blood pressure screenings, managing any on-site medical emergencies, and connecting with members of our community throughout the event.

The next few days are predicted to be unseasonably hot with temperatures rising into the high 90s by Tuesday.
Stay safe in the heat by following these safety tips:

1. Hydrate
Drink constantly: Drink water every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you do not feel thirsty.
Limit coffee, soda, and alcohol: they cause your body to lose fluids faster.
Monitor indicators: Check your urine color; it should ideally look like pale lemonade, not dark apple juice.

2. Optimize Personal Cooling
Wear lightweight clothes: Choose loose-fitting, light-colored, and breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking synthetic blends.
Protect your skin: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Seek air conditioning: Spend time in public libraries, shopping malls, or designated cooling centers if your home lacks air conditioning.

3. Adjust Outdoor Habits
Time your outings: Limit outdoor exposure to early mornings or late evenings when temperatures and the UV index are lowest.
Pace your activities: Take frequent, mandatory breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to let your core temperature drop.
Never leave passengers: Check the backseat every time you park; car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.
Check on others: Monitor high-risk individuals regularly, including toddlers, elderly neighbors, and outdoor workers.

The members of BVAC extend their heartfelt wishes to Bergenfield Police Department T/C Jeri Switzer for a long, happy, and healthy retirement. As a Life Member and the first woman Captain of BVAC, Jeri served our community for decades. Her calm voice and expertise at the dispatch desk will be deeply missed.

BVAC was recently recognized at the Mayor & Council meeting for outstanding work on three recent calls, including a CPR save, a choking save, and a childbirth, alongside the police officers who responded.

We are deeply grateful for this recognition and incredibly proud of the dedication, compassion, and teamwork our members demonstrate each day. It is both our honor and privilege to serve this community and to be there for our residents when they need us most.

BVAC is thrilled to see Lora Schade receive this award! Lora has served the organization is several leadership roles over many years, and has had a pivotal role in making BVAC the organization it is today.

In what proved to be an extremely competitive contest, Bergenfield resident Lora Schade has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Lucille Tendler Community Service Award. This award by the Board of Trustees of the Bergenfield Public Library recognizes the service contributions of the recipient to the Bergenfield community.

As highlighted by nominator Gerard Naylis, "Lora's life has been an exemplary example of service to others in virtually all aspects of her life... Lora has been a cornerstone of volunteer EMS in New Jersey for over four decades. A dedicated member of the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps since 1981, Lora exemplifies the ideals of leadership, service, and advocacy that this award seeks to honor. She is a 1st-generation volunteer whose commitment to EMS was profoundly shaped by her father, a Bergenfield police officer... If you don't know Lora through the EMS service, perhaps you may know her for her strong sense of volunteerism or from sitting on local Bergenfield organizational boards (as she has been a past member of the local Traffic and Safety Committee, Site Plan Committee, and School Safety Committee as a BVAC representative), or with her involvement with the New Jersey/New York Volunteer Firemen's Association (which she has been a member of since early 2025). She is also a past member of Prospect Fire Company #1, Inc. and a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Bergenfield Fire Company #2. Lora is an exemplary volunteer, dedicated to her town and steadfast in her service to others."

A certificate of appreciation will be presented to Lora at an upcoming library program in the Fall of 2026. The Board of Trustees wish to thank all of the individuals who participated in the nomination process.
