To the citizens of Benwood:

Recently the City has undergone separation projects, separating the stormwater from the wastewater. Stormwater is any runoff water from rain, snow melting, and any other water that could infiltrate our sanitary sewers. Wastewater is the water from our toilets, sinks, tubs, any water source that is used in your homes that goes into our sanitary sewers. Stormwater runs to our creeks and the Ohio River while our wastewater is sent to Benwood’s four lift stations, then pumped to Wheeling Pollution for treatment. We are doing our part by separating these two water sources to keep from pumping excessive amounts of unnecessary water to the City of Wheeling in turn keeping our cost down. Please do your part and remove any source that could introduce more water into our wastewater system. This means downspouts and outside drains in yards that you know go into your main sewer line.

Streets, Utilities and Public Service Code

923.15 Stormwater Prohibited.

Discharge of stormwater runoff into the sewer system is hereby prohibited and all owners of property connecting to the sewer system shall provide adequate means for excluding storm water runoff.

923.16 Separation of Downspouts from sewage system.

No person or entity shall install or allow to remain a connection of a roof or other downspout, to a customer service line which connects directly or indirectly with the City of Benwood's sanitary sewer.

This is a team effort, and everyone must work together. Please do your part by removing any known stormwater runoff source that you know of on your property and help lower the costs.

Thank you Benwood!

The Water and Wastewater Division of the Benwood Operations Department is holding a public meeting to discuss our Source Water Protection Plan.

What is Source Water Protection?

It’s a proactive strategy to prevent contaminants from entering the river and underground aquifers that provide our community’s drinking water. By protecting the source, we ensure a safer, more sustainable water supply for everyone.
