Teaching students about how they learn is an important construct in IB. The Approaches to Learning skills (ATLs) include communication, thinking, research, social, and self management skills vital to success in a global environment.

Growing these ATLs is a journey. In this photo series, we have kindergartners presenting their Native American projects to first grade friends, first graders retelling stories to adults at the Fairy Tale ball, and fourth graders researching for their final exhibition project.
Notice the pride on the faces of the fourth grade students at Exhibition! Learning is a life-long journey! ๐ŸŒ

If you say Balanced to an adult, they think โ€œwork/life.โ€
IB views this LPA (Learner Profile Attribute) in a much broader sense. In the instructional process, this might include:
-Balancing different ways of learning.
-Balancing thinking and doing.
-Balancing perspectives.
-Balancing strengths with areas for growth.
-Balancing academic, physical, social, and emotional needs.
Our job as teachers is to build a wide variety of experiences that give each of our studentsโ€ฆ โš–๏ธ Balance. ๐ŸŒ

Playing games is a great way to strengthen the Learner Profile Attribute of Risk-Taker. Understanding rules and taking turns help us to move through opportunities both big and small.
These boundaries help us feel safe when taking risks such as joining in group games (like sports), playing with friends at the playground, or even beating Mr. B (or parents!) at Tik Tac Toe. Friday night game nights are a great way to build the skills of your Risk-Taker! ๐ŸŒ

Inquiry doesnโ€™t have to be complicated. When students tug on the string of interest or wonder, they explore new ideas and concepts. Parents are the first teachers of inquiry when they allow children to pick their bedtime book, explore a bug up close, or plant a flower. Cheers to navigating the world ~letโ€™s see what we can discover this summer! ๐ŸŒ

They are on their way! We celebrated all things kinder today, bursting with pride as they sang songs and spoke about their aspirations. Special thanks to all of the families and friends who came today to laugh and cry with us as we watched all of our big little friends move on to first grade!! ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅฒ

Fourth grade โœ… !!
This group of students have embodied each of the learner profile attributes over their years at TIS. The have met challenges (Risk-Takers), grown in their friendships (Caring), modeled leadership (Principles, Reflective) and moved the needle on their learning (Inquirer, Knowledgeable. Thinkers).

Today we celebrated their success! Congratulations and best wishes from all of us to all of you! โ™ฅ๏ธ๐ŸŒ

We celebrated an amazing 2025-2026 at our last Global Gathering! Eleanor opened with a beautiful song and then we celebrated third and fourth graders who achieved growth in ATLAS. We also announced the students who were randomly chosen to go bowling with Ms. DeWitt! We closed out with a picture collage of all the amazing fun and learning we had! Thanks for a great year, Navigators!! ๐ŸŒโ™ฅ๏ธ

Kinders at TIS learned all about how โ€œOur actions make a difference in our community and our worldโ€ when they went to Apple Seed Farm this week! Learning about how composting works, the resources needed to grow an apple tree, and all the different changes in the production of an apple, they saw we can do a lot to take care of our world both big and small. They explored the Learner Profile attributes of Change and Responsibility in their learning!

How do you honor the enormous impact of an educator who has given 25+ years of their lives to children and the community?
With two cakes, of course!! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‚

We celebrated the dedicated years of service of Ms Janet Chaney, Librarian, and Ms Ronda Sandidge, Academic Math Coach, at TIS yesterday. We heard great stories, laughed, shed some tears, and ate cake with friends and family. Cheers to both of you as you go into the sunset!! Congratulations in your retirement! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ‚

4th grade Navigator Ambassadors loved their field trip to meet the mayor and learn about everything our amazing city has to offer! We heard from Mayor Orman, parks and recreation and took a tour of the new Bentonville Public Library. What a great day of community learning! ๐ŸŒ
