Labor Day Weekend Boat Safety:
Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times of the year on Kentucky waterways. A few simple precautions can help make sure the weekend ends safely.
Before You Leave the Dock
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket — especially children and anyone who isn't a strong swimmer.
• Check the weather before heading out and monitor conditions while you're on the water.
• Inspect your boat — fuel, battery, lights, bilge pump, navigation equipment and steering.
• Carry required safety equipment, including a throwable flotation device, fire extinguisher and signaling devices.
• Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.
• Don't overload the boat.
While You're On the Water
• Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober operator.
• Keep a proper lookout for swimmers, other boats, kayaks, jet skis and obstacles.
• Maintain a safe speed, particularly around marinas, docks and crowded areas.
• Keep passengers seated when the boat is moving.
• Stay clear of the stern when the engine is running. Carbon monoxide can build up near the back of a boat.
• Use extra caution after dark and make sure navigation lights are working.
If Something Goes Wrong
• Stay calm and put on your life jacket.
• If someone falls overboard, keep them in sight and throw flotation.
• Call 911 for an emergency and provide your location as accurately as possible.
• Don't attempt a rescue that puts you or others in additional danger.
Remember: Life jackets save lives, sober boaters prevent accidents, and a little preparation can make for a great Labor Day weekend on the water.
