We have a problem. We're in the middle of a build and our Construction Superintendent has had/is having health issues. We desperately need someone who can step in and finish the build. A retired contractor? An experienced carpenter with time on his hands? PLEASE text me or call at 270.493.9258 if you think you could help or know somebody who might.

We're working! After what seems like a TERRIBLE series of delays, we're working on the new house in Calvert City. If you've volunteered with us before, you may want to call the Construction Superintendent Russell Holley directly to get times and dates. His email is [email protected]. If you have NOT volunteered before, but would LIKE to, reply to this post and we'll get you registered and trained!

Everyone who reads this: A couple of weeks ago, we posted a call for applicants to become partners with Marshall County Habitat for Humanity to build a house. The response was, frankly, overwhelming. We've had several hundred folks express interest, and something over a hundred applications have been sent out. Well over eight hundred "shares" were forwarded, and we're still getting interest. If you have not contacted our Director of Family Selection and Support, Mrs. Judy James, you can still do so. If you HAVE contacted her, and haven't received an application, yet, then please be patient. She's working as fast as she can. If you still vjames1need an application, she is: Judy James, at [email protected]. She still has quite a backlog on her voicemail (it clogged completely up, once, already!), but if you give it a while and you haven't heard, you might call her at 270.362.3439. I promise you are not being ignored; it's just a VERY big workload, right now.

Wow! GREAT response from our post last evening! We haven't posted for a while. Marshall County Habitat got hit with a double whammy a couple of years ago: first, Covid made it pretty much impossible to get a group together to do anything, and then the tornado blew material prices so high that we simply couldn't afford new construction. Prices tripled, almost overnight. Well, the cost of the materials is what drives the price (and thus the payments!) of the homes we build. So, we've been focusing on other things. But now we're back, and we find that we have no applicants. Several of you DID ask some really good questions, though, so I'll try to answer some of them here.
Q 1. Does Habitat give houses to people who need them?
A 1. No. Habitat does not "give" people homes. We partner with qualified but underemployed people (usually families) to BUILD their own homes.
Q 2. What IS Habitat, anyway?
A 2. Habitat for Humanity is a Christian Mission whose sole concern is helping qualified applicants build their own safe, decent, affordable housing for themselves and their families.
Q 3. How do I know if I qualify for partnership?
A 3. You need to call or e-mail our Family Selection and Support Chairman, Judy James. Contact info is elsewhere on the page. But basically, you have to have a job, you cannot have overwhelming debt, and you have to be physically and mentally capable of participating in your own build. We provide some labor and a lot of advice, along with all the materials, but you'll be doing most of the work.
Q 4. So, how does the money part work?
A 4. You fill out the application and return it. If the numbers work (and there IS some paperwork--everything has to be verified and so forth) then you'll meet with members of the Board of directors and we'll work out a contract, pick a floorplan, figure out a payment, etc. If everything is good, we'll sign the contract and go to work. We provide the materials and some of the work, you provide most of the work (your own and your friends and family). When it's done, we hand you the key and you start making monthly payments until the materials and overhead are paid for.
Q 5. What's that about overhead? I don't like that.
A 5. I don't blame you. I don't either. But there ARE some things beyond materials that we have to spend: permits, inspections, electricians, plumbers, things that are required. We DO all that, but you'll have to pay for it. Actual costs, spread out over 20 years or so, but the expenses DO have to be paid. We don't make a profit and we don't get paid. Your payment will be calculated based on the actual expense to build the house. We are allowed to charge a small interest amount in order to cover this, but so far, we have not, and we don't intend to.
Q 6. How many houses have you already built?
A 6. Habitat for Humanity Marshall County has built 17 houses and re-habbed several more. We've been doing this here in the County since 1980.

A couple of days ago, in this space appeared an appeal for applications for partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build houses. We were overwhelmed with the response. Obviously, we struck a nerve. Every inquiry will receive our attention and a reply. Thank you for supporting your local Habitat affiliate (that's us!) SURELY we'll be able to partner with at least a few of the several hundred requests for information r applications that we received. Thank you so much!

We're done! The Cherrywood build that we've been working on for the past couple of years is ready to occupy. There'll be a BIG turnover celebration on October 1st at the house, at 5:30 p.m. If you worked on the house at ALL, during the build, please come by and see the results of your labor, and join us in a joyful turnover of the keys to the new homeowners.

We had a GREAT day on the Calvert City build. We kicked off the day at 8:00 with a prayer and a safety briefing, as always. We had a good crew early, and it grew as the morning went along. The big thing today was roof decking. Construction supervisor Russ Holley led the way, up top, while Pastor Greg Waldrop sawed the sheets of decking and led the crew on the ground. Several "old hands" were there, and some "first-timers" came to work. Among the latter were Hal and Jennifer Freeman, old friends from Russellville, Kentucky, who recently moved to our area. We showed them the slide show orientation, loaned the whatever tools they needed (not many--Jen came with her own hammer!) and put them to work.

Last week, we finished up some details involving concrete. Here are some pics of this final pouring.
