🇺🇸 Yesterday, beneath the waving flags at the Saline County Courthouse Veterans Memorial, our community came together not simply for a ceremony, but for a sacred act of remembrance.

Memorial Day is not about a long weekend, a trip to the lake, or the unofficial start of summer. It is about honoring the men and women who gave their lives so that the rest of us could live ours in freedom. Every flag placed, every name remembered, and every moment of silence carried the weight of a sacrifice that can never truly be repaid.

President Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” That freedom exists today because brave Americans were willing to lay down everything for people they would never meet and a country they deeply loved.

Yesterday, we also honored the families who carry that sacrifice with them every day — especially our Gold Star Families. A Gold Star Family is the immediate family of a service member who died while serving our nation. While our fallen heroes paid the ultimate price, their families continue to bear that loss for a lifetime. Their strength, courage, and sacrifice deserve not only our respect, but our continued gratitude.

As taps echoed across the courthouse grounds and American flags moved in the wind, we were reminded that freedom is not free. It was purchased at a tremendous cost by ordinary men and women who answered an extraordinary call.

A special thank you to Veteran of Foreign Wars of the United States Raymond McGill Post 2256 and American Legion Benton Post 19 for organizing yesterday’s meaningful ceremony and ensuring our fallen heroes were honored with the dignity and remembrance they deserve.

May we never forget those who gave everything for our country — and the families who continue to carry their memory forward every single day. 🇺🇸
