The City of Benton Harbor City Hall is closed today, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience, freedom, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

Residents are reminded of their responsibilities for upkeep along streets and alleys as outlined in Benton Harbor City Code. This includes keeping areas such as tree lawns and sidewalks maintained, free of excessive vegetation, and clear of litter to help ensure safe and accessible neighborhoods for everyone.

City Code supports this effort through several provisions, including Chapter 18 (litter control), Chapter 37 (sidewalk maintenance), and Chapter 45 (vegetation, upkeep along streets and alleys). Thank you to all residents who continue to do their part in keeping Benton Harbor clean, safe, and well maintained.

The City of Benton Harbor proudly celebrated the dedication of the Mamie L. Yarbrough Benton Harbor Public Library. A Berrien County commissioner, former Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education member, and longtime community leader, Yarbrough has served on the library board for more than 26 years, including 15 years as president, helping guide the library’s growth and impact in our community.

Residents gathered to honor her legacy, unveil a portrait by local artist Eric Bradford, and celebrate her lasting commitment to education, public service, and the Benton Harbor community.

The Benton Harbor City Commission officially approved the acceptance of the 2026 FDCVT Grant from the Michigan Department of Treasury during its June 1 meeting.

The $221,018 grant will allow the City to purchase new Public Works equipment, including a skid steer loader, attachments, and a leaf vacuum. These tools will help city crews maintain streets, parks, vacant lots, and neighborhoods more efficiently.

This investment will strengthen the City’s ability to serve residents, improve neighborhood cleanup efforts, and support ongoing beautification projects throughout Benton Harbor.

Best of all, the grant covers the full cost of the equipment, bringing much-needed resources to our community without impacting the City’s budget.

Together, we’re continuing to build a cleaner, safer, and stronger Benton Harbor.

Yesterday, the City of Benton Harbor proudly celebrated the renaming and dedication of the Mamie L. Yarbrough Benton Harbor Public Library, honoring a leader whose impact on our community spans generations.

For 26 years, Commissioner Mamie L. Yarbrough has served on the Benton Harbor Public Library Board, including more than a decade as president. Her leadership has helped expand access to technology, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure the library remained a welcoming place for learning, opportunity, and growth. She has also served as Berrien County’s 4th District Commissioner for over 20 years.

What stands on the building today is more than a name. It is a tribute to decades of service, vision, and unwavering dedication to education and community. As Commissioner Yarbrough shared during the ceremony, this honor reflects how far our community has come in recognizing the contributions of Black leaders and women whose work continues to make a difference.

Thank you, Commissioner Yarbrough, for your extraordinary legacy and for your belief in the power of knowledge, access, and community. Your impact will continue to inspire future generations who walk through these doors.

Congratulations, Commissioner Yarbrough.
