Happy Birthday, Stacy Keach — June 2

Stacy Keach’s character “Bad Bob” in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean is one of the film’s most memorable—and downright bizarre—figures.
Bad Bob rides into town (filmed at the Mescal Movie Set) looking for a classic Western showdown with Judge Roy Bean (Paul Newman)… but Bean doesn’t exactly play by the rules.

The Mescal Movie Set served as the primary filming location for the movie, and this summer they’re offering special Historical Sunset Film Tours in the evening—an unforgettable way to experience this iconic setting.

On this day in history—June 1, 1887 — Ike Clanton was shot and killed by detective Jonas V. Brighton near Springerville, Arizona.

Hollywood paints Ike Clanton as a loud, cowardly troublemaker . . . but the real man was far more complicated than the movies show. While history tells us he was quick-tempered, a heavy drinker, and tied to outlaw activity. It also reveals he was highly social, an active businessman, and well-known around town in Tombstone.

So, what do you think? Was Ike a misunderstood figure shaped by a violent era, or a frontier survivor just doing what he had to do? Let us know in the comments!

“Well… bye.” — Remembering Powers Boothe
Born June 1, 1948

As Curly Bill in the movie Tombstone, Boothe steals the movie in several scenes. Although brutal, he is also oddly likable. The line "Well bye" is memorable because of Boothe's cool and dismissive delivery. Even with major stars like Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, many critics and fans say Boothe nearly steals the movie in some scenes.

The Mescal Movie Set was the primary filming location for the movie Tombstone. This summer, the set is offering special Historical Sunset Film Tours in the evening.

This famous scene from "The Outlaw Josey Wales" was filmed at the Mescal Movie Set. The Mercantile building—originally built for the film—still stands today and is one of the highlights on our Historical Film Tours.

Born May 26, 1923, James Arness will always be remembered as Marshal Matt Dillon

He had an incredible run on Gunsmoke—appearing in 635 episodes over 20 years (1955–1975)—one of the longest and most iconic performances any actor has ever had on television.

James even walked the dusty boardwalk of the Mescal Movie Set several times, including:
• Gunsmoke: The Sodbusters (1972)
• Gunsmoke: Thirty a Month and Found (1974)

He later returned as Matt Dillon in the made-for-TV films:
• Gunsmoke: To the Last Man (1992)
• Gunsmoke: One Man’s Justice (1994)

Want to experience a piece of that history for yourself? Take a Historical Sunset Film Tour of the Mescal Movie Set. Sunset Tours begin May 30!

Pay tribute to the heroes who gave everything for our freedom.

Memorial Day is a solemn day dedicated to honoring and remembering the U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service to the country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began after the Civil War as a way to commemorate fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. Over time, it evolved into a national day of remembrance for all service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
