With hot and humid weather expected across Vermont this weekend, staying hydrated is more important than ever, especially for older adults, caregivers, and anyone spending time outdoors.

Did you know that about 20% of your daily fluid intake can come from foods? Water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, oranges, peaches, and lettuce can help keep you hydrated while providing important nutrients.

This helpful hydration guide was shared by our partners at TRIO Community Meals, who work every day to support the health and well-being of older Vermonters.

A few simple reminders:
💧 Drink water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
🍉 Choose hydrating fruits and vegetables.
🏠 Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day when possible.
👥 Check in on older family members, friends, and neighbors.

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, particularly during the first major heat events of the summer. Taking a few extra precautions now can help you stay safe and healthy all weekend long.

For information about nutrition services, community meals, and other supports available to older adults in Rutland and Bennington Counties, visit SVCOA.org or call our Helpline at 1-800-642-5119.

🌞 Hot Weather Alert for Vermont 🌞

The National Weather Service is forecasting several days of hot weather across Vermont this week, with heat index values reaching the 90s in some areas.

Older adults, caregivers, young children, and people with chronic health conditions are at greater risk for heat-related illness. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and check in on family, friends, and neighbors who may need extra support.

Watch for signs of heat illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, or muscle cramps. If symptoms become severe or someone appears confused, call 9-1-1 immediately.
