Commemorating Memorial Day — Monday, May 25

Memorial Day is in honor of those who have died while serving in the Unites State Armed Forces. The first national observance was on May 30, 1868 and was originally known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day became a Federal holiday in its own right in 1971 and is always held on the last Monday in May.

Bennington honors Memorial Day every year and a parade is organized by the VFW and American Legion who take turns organizing the event. This year the parade is organized by the VFW Post 1332.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 25. To be in the parade, line up at 11am on Scott Street. The parade will step off at noon. The route will be down Main Street to the four corners, turning right onto North Street. The parade will pause at the VFW Post #1332 for a salute, and then pauses again at the bridge over the Walloomsac for a wreath laying. The parade continues up North Street and turns into the Vermont Veterans Home for a final ceremony and salute.

Join us in honoring those who sacrificed their lives for all of us. “We don’t know them all… but we owe them all."

DEPOT STREET BRIDGE: Out with the old... in with the new!

Amazing! Today our Town crews were going full blast pouring the deck panels for the new Depot Street Bridge while at the same time removing the prior bridge. As previously warned... the road there is now closed while the new bridge is being built. Coming from the north on Depot Street, turn on River Street to avoid the bridge closure. From the south, stay on Main Street to either Benmont Avenue or North Street.

GBCS and the businesses around Anytime Fitness are 100% accessible and this work will not disturb customers visiting those locations. We are grateful for the patience of local businesses and the community as we do this essential infrastructure work!

By doing this in house, we are saving our tax payers well over $600,000. Kudos to our amazing Town workers and our Bridge foreman Steve Tatro!

For more information and updates on the project, visit the Town website at: https://www.benningtonvt.org/services/public_works/depot_street_bridge.php

You can also sign up to be notified when the page is updated, and we also post our work schedule every week on our Public Notices page.
