Someone lost a pair of glasses in the North Second/Ball field area & they have been turned into BPD. Yes we know this post provides ZERO info about the glasses we found. If a tornado warning is issued and you’re at home, the goal is to get as many walls between you and the outside as possible and protect yourself from flying debris.

Safest places in a home

Best option: Basement or storm shelter

* Go to the basement immediately.
* Stay away from windows.
* Get under something sturdy like a workbench or heavy table if possible.
* Cover your head and neck with your arms, a mattress, helmet, or blankets.

If you do NOT have a basement

Go to:

* A small interior room on the lowest floor
* Examples:
* Bathroom
* Closet
* Hallway
* Laundry room

Avoid:

* Windows
* Exterior walls
* Garages
* Rooms with large roofs like living rooms or gyms

Mobile homes

Mobile homes are not safe in tornadoes, even if tied down.

* Leave immediately for a sturdy building or storm shelter.
* If you live in one, have a plan ahead of time for where you’ll go.

During the tornado

* Stay low to the ground.
* Protect your head and neck.
* Wear shoes if possible in case of debris afterward.
* Keep pets with you if you can do so quickly.
* Use helmets for kids if available.

Warning signs of a tornado

Common signs include:

* Tornado sirens
* Emergency phone alerts
* Dark green or rotating clouds
* Loud roaring sound like a freight train
* Large hail and severe wind

Important difference

* Tornado Watch = conditions are possible; stay alert.
* Tornado Warning = tornado detected or radar-indicated; take shelter NOW.

Good emergency items to keep ready

* Flashlight
* Weather radio
* Phone charger/power bank
* Shoes
* Water
* Medications
* Helmets/blankets
