Photos from our training during Immediate Resolve 2025 (IR-25) in Greece:

Soldiers of Blackjack Troop, 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry Regiment worked alongside a Greek Reconnaissance Platoon for two weeks, culminating with continuous 48-hour operations to include reconnoitering and securing a wet gap crossing along the Nestos River at night.

When we weren’t in the field training, we took time for a very special promotion. Please congratulate SGT Crowell, an outstanding Soldier, who earned his place amongst the backbone of the Army, the NCO Corps!

Another year, another Ragnar! 💥
Once again, soldiers and alumni of Blackjack Troop took on the grueling 120-mile relay race with 17,376 feet of elevation gain through the challenging trails of Mount Ascutney in Brownsville, Vermont. 🏃‍♂️💨

Despite last-minute changes that left us short-handed, our team refused to quit. 💪 Every runner stepped up SFC.Sheppard, SFC.Yuknis, and SSG.Buck each crushed 24 miles! SSG.Weatherwalks, SSG.Brandmeyer, and PFC.Allcroft rounded out the squad.🏅

Even with fewer runners, we finished in an incredible 22:33, shaving 25 minutes off last year’s time, retaining 1st place 🥇in the military division and 10th overall out of 103 teams! 🔥

Congratulations runners—once again you showed up and showed out.

Please join us in congratulating two outstanding Blackjack Troopers, SGT Garrison and SGT Phillips, for their solid performance at the Winston P. Wilson Machine Gun Championship. Below is a message from the VT Marksmanship Coordinator:

"The Winston P. Wilson (WPW) Machine Gun Championships concluded this past weekend. The event was held at Camp Robinson, AR and lasted a week. Competitors had to fire their M240’s as a two-man team, with the gunner competing in additional matches with the M17, and the assistant gunner participating in additional matches with the M4. Vermont sent one team consisting of the following individuals:

SGT Nataniel Garrison (B Troop, 1-172 CAV)
SGT Austin Phillips (B Troop, 1-172 CAV)

This was the first time both SGT Garrison and SGT Phillips competed outside of TAG Matches. While tough to go from the state-level to the national-level, both individuals performed well and learned a lot. Most of the matches they finished about middle of the pack, but they did have a couple of solid performances throughout the week. During the Blind Shoot Match, they finished 7th overall and during the Field Fire 1 Match they finished 4th overall.

Normally we hold a train-up prior to sending our teams to these events, but IR25 and funding prevented us from doing so this year. That said, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of either Soldier at these events. SGT Garrison was invited to the MAC I Regional Combat Championships in August, but will be at Ranger school instead. SGT Phillips (who remains the only Soldier or Airman in the state to have earned the Governor’s Twenty tab in rifle, pistol and machine gun at TAG Matches) was offered his slot."

Another great video capturing the work we put in during IR25. Thank you to the Public Affairs team and Col. Tantillo for the recognition!

That’s a wrap for Annual Training 2025. This year we traveled to Greece for two weeks and took part in the NATO exercise: Immediate Response. In the coming days, we plan to share more of our lessons learned and our success stories. We will show you that if you want to become a Scout, Blackjack Troop is the family you want to be a part of. Each of these Troopers is an honor to serve alongside and we’re always seeking growth—so please reach out if you’d like further information.

This April, our very own SSG. Buck will take on his second Tough Ruck Boston, a 26.2-mile march honoring our Fallen Military & First Responders.

2025 Tough Ruck Boston participants carry the names of fallen comrades and a 35+ lb. rucksack, all while raising critical funds to support military families and families of the Fallen in times of need.
Those who complete this incredible challenge earn the official 129th Boston Marathon Medallion and recognition from the Boston Athletic Association.

Let’s show our support for SSG. Buck and all the ruckers making this effort to honor our heroes!

1LT Connor McNeil and SSG Shane Yuknis continued B-Troop’s long-standing relationship with the Canadian Arctic Response Company Group (ARGC/GCIA) by participating in training event Guerrier Nordique (Nordic Warrior) 25. They were joined by 23 other U.S. service members from various organizations, including the Vermont Army National Guard, Virginia National Guard, 75th Ranger Regiment, Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center, 10th Mountain as well as members of the Canadian 35 and 34 CBG.

The event involved traversing over 20 miles across the frozen Lake Saint-Jean on skis while pulling platoon equipment on pulk sleds. Participants conducted reconnaissance, platoon attacks, and screen-line operations while enduring temperatures ranging from -25°F to 28°F and whiteout conditions that reduced visibility to less than half a mile.

Emerging as key assets to the mission, 1LT.McNeil served as the Platoon Leader, effectively planning and executing tactical operations, while SSG.Yuknis served as the tend group leader, ensuring all personnel were prepared for cold weather operations, maintaining platoon equipment, and fostering unit morale.

We eagerly anticipate leveraging their expertise to enhance our cold-weather proficiency and readiness for future missions.
