Deputy Hudson had a blast hanging out with the kiddos at this year’s Kids Fest, hosted by Sisters Park & Recreation District! Carnival games, Touch‑a‑Truck, balloon art, and plenty of smiles made for a fun day at the Sisters Community Recreation Center.

Our deputies truly enjoy every opportunity to get out and connect with the community.

Sheriff Rupert and our team stepped outside the Sheriff’s Office to stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the Cuen family as our community honors the life of 6‑year‑old Ember Cuen.

Our deputies tied red and orange ribbons to their patrol cars and joined Central Oregonians in wearing Ember’s colors (red and orange)—symbols of the bright, joyful spark she brought into the world.

We stand with the Cuen family today, not only in grief, but in solidarity and support. For those who wish to help the family during this unimaginable time, a GoFundMe has been created to assist with their needs.

We are holding the Cuen family close in our thoughts and prayers, and we join the community in keeping Ember’s light shining. 🙏

***UPDATE AS OF 3:25pm***

One lane of traffic is open in both directions. Traffic will be slow going, especially since it's Friday heading into the weekend. The Sheriff's Office suggests avoiding the area if possible or finding an alternative route. Oregon State Police will be providing additional information about the accident.

***INITIAL POST***
Be advised that both lanes of Highway 97 North of Terrebonne, near the High Bridge and Ogden Wayside, are closed in both directions. Oregon State Police and DCSO deputies are responding to a motor vehicle accident. An air ambulance has been dispatched.

Please avoid the area. It's unknown how long the highway will be closed at this time.

A fast response from Search and Rescue volunteers with the Deschutes County Sheriff's office helped ensure a safe outcome for an ill hiker in the Badlands Wilderness Area east of Bend.

At 5:11pm on Wednesday, June 3, a Special Services Deputy received a 911 call from a woman reporting her friend, a 75‑year‑old from the Portland area, had become ill on the trail and couldn’t make it back to the Flat Iron Rock Trailhead.

SAR volunteers answered the call and hiked approximately 1.4 miles to reach the pair. The hiker was transported out using a wheeled litter and brought back to the waiting Bend Fire & Rescue ambulance staged at the trailhead. She was taken to St. Charles-Bend for further medical treatment.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office thanks the SAR volunteers and Bend Fire & Rescue for their quick and coordinated response.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office recently launched a new tradition with its first annual Awards Ceremony, honoring the individuals who serve our community with courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment.

The evening opened with bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace,” followed by the DCSO Honor Guard presenting the colors. Dave Clemens, host of The Dave Clemens Experience on KQAK 105.7, was the Master of Ceremonies, and Chance Mott delivered a standout fiddle performance of the national anthem.

The auditorium at Caldera High School was filled with staff, families, friends, and community partners joining together to recognize exceptional work and meaningful contributions across our office.

Throughout the program, Sheriff Ty Rupert had the honor of presenting medals and awards for courageous actions, life‑saving efforts, and outstanding service that reflect the values of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. The awards included:

☑️ Certificate of Achievement
☑️ Certificate of Commendation
☑️ Distinguished Service Medal
☑️ Sheriff's Medal
☑️ Civilian Medal of Heroism
☑️ Life Saving Medal
☑️ The Sheriff Star

Sheriff Ty Rupert proudly swore in two new Corrections Deputies, Grant Harris and Justin Metzler.

Deputy Harris joins us after a successful career as an Executive Chef at Brickhouse in Bend, with additional experience in high‑end restaurants in New Orleans. Deputy Harris comes from a law enforcement family, so he's excited to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Deputy Metzler comes to the Sheriff's Office after several years in the waste management industry, working for Cascade Disposal and Republic Services. He is also an active powerlifter and currently serves in the Oregon National Guard. 🇺🇸

Please join us in welcoming Deputies Harris and Metzler to the team!

International visitor! 🇩🇪

We had a special visitor all the way from Frankfurt, Germany, this week. Oliver, a Customs Officer there, stopped by the Sheriff's Office during his travels. We had a great time exchanging patches, sharing stories about our work, and showing him around our facility. It was a fun reminder of how connected our professions are across borders, and we appreciated the opportunity to build that international camaraderie.

⚠️ High Winds in La Pine – Use Caution ⚠️

La Pine is currently experiencing strong wind gusts, and we’re receiving numerous reports of downed trees, including several involving power lines.

The photos above shows a large tree blocking Paulina Lake Rd. at Newberry Rd. Deschutes County Public Works is actively working to remove it, but the road may remain closed for several hours.

Please use extra caution if you’re driving in South County.

✅ Watch for debris and emergency workers in the roadway
✅ Treat any downed power line as energized and extremely dangerous
✅ Consider delaying travel if possible

Stay safe out there, everyone!
