🟢🟡 Western Hills AFJROTC Cadets Keep Camp Bowie Beautiful! 🟡🟢

On Saturday morning, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., members of the Western Hills High School AFJROTC program dedicated their time and efforts to cleaning a large segment of Highway 580 (Camp Bowie Boulevard), from just outside the Loop 820 area to approximately a half-mile short of I-30, avoiding the active construction zone.

The team collected six full bags of trash and removed numerous pieces of large highway debris that could not be bagged, helping make our community cleaner and safer.

Participating cadets included:

⭐ Fermin Ramirez

A special note of pride for Fermin and his family: his older brother, Ariel Ramirez, a former AFJROTC cadet, is now beginning his second year at The University of Texas at Austin as a member of the U.S. Air Force ROTC program.

Even more impressive, four of these same cadets, Nemganga Muya, Kunapherik Peng, Parker Hamilton, and Devonne Gould, served on the Opening Color Guard during Friday night's home football game before returning the next morning for this community service project.

The cadets hope to complete this cleanup effort at least three more times during the school year and, hopefully, on a few cooler Texas mornings!

Thank you to our cadets and families for exemplifying the AFJROTC values of service, leadership, citizenship, and community pride.

Your Cougars took on the Burkburnett Bulldogs on Friday and unfortunately started the 2026 campaign with a loss. For 3 quarters, your cougars went toe to toe with a very tough, disciplined, and good Burkburnett team. The 4th quarter got away from us as we had to push to make some big plays and turnovers, costly mistakes, and injuries took their toll.

Senior Running back Ashton Richardson took the first handoff of the game and after being bottled up at the line of scrimmage broke a couple of tackles and raced 70 yards for the first Touchdown of the season. Senior kicker Ricardo Tellez, playing in his first ever football game, knocked in the extra point try to make it 7 - 0. The Bulldogs took the lead into halftime 15-7.

The defense played extremely well against a Wing-T offense that we only had a week to prepare for, including one day we could not go outside because of the smoke in the air. We were extremely proud of the defense and their efforts. Leading the way were Mauricio Martinez, Ashton Richardson, Brayden Burns, D'Tyree Faulk, Gabriel Christion, and Mohammed Soumahoro.

The offense struggled a little bit in the opening game under a barrage of blitzing from the bulldog defense. Ashton Richardson finished the night with 122 yards rushing and Tyler Johnston ran 10 times for 44 yards including a touchdown. Gabriel Christion led all receivers with 2 catches for 20 yards.

The special teams played fairly well after fixing some early punting issues. D'Tyree Faulk had two fake punt runs for big first downs.

The Cougars head to Big Spring, Texas this Friday night to take on the Pecos Eagles at Big Spring High School, a neutral site. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
