While responding to an emergency call to help our community, one of our firefighters had his personal vehicle struck by a passing driver near the station on Hwy 9. No injuries occurred, but this serves as an important reminder to slow down and remain attentive when driving near fire stations. If you know whose vehicle this is or have any information regarding the car or driver, please contact the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office at (831) 461-7400, or Ben Lomond Fire Department at (831) 336-5495

When your patient weighs 1,000 pounds, you better not be horsin’ around. 🐴
Tonight’s training focused on large animal rescue - a surprisingly common call in our mountain community.

Last night at approximately 12:30 am a structure fire was reported in the apartment above the Brookdale Post Office. Before any fire units arrived, neighbors had successfully helped 4 individuals out of the building. Fire engines arrived to find a well involved fire and were informed there were still 3 people trapped inside; an adult male and two children.

Firefighters quickly assisted the male and one juvenile down to safety. Two BCFD firefighters, along with a Ben Lomond firefighter conducted a search and quickly located an unconscious child inside the apartment. The child was pulled from the apartment and carried to an awaiting ambulance.

The adult and 2 juvenile victims were transported to hospitals via ambulance. Most recent reports are that all 3 are doing well and recovering from smoke inhalation and burns. While one of the family’s dogs was able to make it out safely, unfortunately their other dog died as a result of the fire.

Crews remained on scene for several hours to contain and control the fire. The Brookdale Post Office sustained water damage, but did not burn. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
