The Mississippi River Runs Through US Bemidji

The Mississippi River Runs Through US Bemidji Community action & education on water quality & low-impact recreation in the Mississippi headwaters

The nationwide "River Runs through US" program is a "Source to Sea" Mississippi River initiative of the United Nations Environment Program, NOAA, and the National Geographic Society, with the support of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) and regional Rotary clubs. The main focus of this initiative is to monitor and clean up the Mississippi River, from the headwaters to the

Gulf of Mexico, especially with regard to the number one pollutant which is plastic. Along with river monitoring and clean-up, the mission of this program is to improve river recreation and expand river education, to help maintain a healthy river ecosystem, encourage sustainable outdoor recreation in and alongside the river, and to support and assist the small towns along the river that provide access to it. Locally, the Bemidji Rotary Club has joined forces with this initiative, along with the Mississippi Headwaters River Angels, and will coordinate local projects that fit into the larger regional river initiative, with a specific local focus on the following:

--river cleanup (including cleanup of headwaters river and tributary shorelines and shores of Lake Bemidj)
--cleanup and improvement of canoe campsites along the Mississippi Headwaters Watertrail, between Lake Itasca and Cass Lake,
--river education, including workshops and events for educators and community groups,
-- participation in area special events, especially those related to water, the river, and Lake Bemidji, and
--assisting the local Mississippi River Angels in welcoming and aiding through-paddlers who are on "Source to Sea" expeditions from Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico

If you would like to join us please let us know by responding to this email [email protected] and we will add you to our mailing list. Future events include a field trips to assess some of the local canoe landings and carry out site improvement projects there, to be followed by several local lake and river cleanup events throughout the summer, welcome events at Paul and Babe for the through-paddlers coming to Bemidji, and educator workshops. We would welcome your involvement, and hope you will consider joining us!

Our river project will benefit our community and our local environment, as well as memorialize and continue the hard work of three local men who were passionate about the headwaters and worked hard to preserve its unique and special legacy:

ART KEENAN, a local DNR Chief of Forestery , whose passion for the river, wilderness preservation, for low-impact sustainable recreation led him to establish the DNR Mississippi River Water Trail in the 1960's, and to develop canoe campsites for paddlers throughout the headwaters region

PAT RYAN, a DNR water resources and water trail officer, who took the baton from Art Keenan and maintained the canoe landings and canoe campsites to high standards for many years in the headwaters region

REIS HALL, a canoe enthusiast, conservationist, and river guide , who was a founding member of the local Mississippi Revival festivities in the 1980's and 1990's, and who was also a past president of the Bemidji Rotary Club. and JIM MILLER, a musician and outdoorsman who was also a founding member of the local Mississippi River Revival, and who played a large role in many aspects of the "True Source" headwaters documentary and education project.

Happy Earth Day! We celebrated by taking part in a shoreline cleanup at BSU and Diamond Point. We collected a total of 104 pounds of garbage, mostly plastic junk that will now not travel around Lake Bemidji or down the Mississippi River. There are more events you can attend this week, most importantly a big litter cleanup in the vicinity of Library Park—meet at 11am by Paul and Babe on Saturday April 26!

Dear friends,

we all know that the river runs through our town, though much of the year it is frozen, not free flowing! But as April unfolds, and winter's ice and snow retreat, our beloved area lakes and streams are opening again here in the Mississippi Headwaters region, and soon we'll be out on them, fishing, paddling, swimming, and more.

The best way to celebrate this seasonal time of renewal is to help with river education and with litter pickup to help improve the shorelines of our local waterways, especially along the course of our Mississippi River as it flows to and through Bemidji!

The Bemidji Rotary Club participates in the regional " The River Runs Through US" network of Rotary river projects spanning from the headwaters through multiple states all the way to the river delta in Louisiana!

Locally, the Bemidji River project has partnered for several years with the local Mississippi Headwaters River Paddlers and River Angels group in doing litter pickups and site maintanence at numerous canoe landings along the Headwaters Water Trail.

Now we are expanding our alliance with partners at the Beltrami Soil and Water Conservation District, and BSU Students for the Environment at Bemidji State University. We are about the launch a busy season of activity ahead, we hope you can join us for some or all even if you have never participated before!

Please contact Janet for more info and/or to sign up.

What a great weekend to be on the river! We had a smaller crew than usual, but we had a good time. On Saturday, Sharon, Lisa and Janet picked up many bags of litter from 5 canoe landings, did a needs assessment for future campsite improvements at 2 canoe campsites, and cleared downed tree branches on an access road. We ended up at the High Banks campsite where we had a cookout and campout, followed by a morning of checking out the new river bank erosion control project, sanding graffiti from the new wooden stairs at the landing as well as from the benches and the picnic table we recently built and installed. Then Alex and Nick joined us along with their chainsaws and gear to take down some dead and damaged trees including the big dead tree hanging over the fireplace.

It was only a small crew of three Rotarians and two new River Angels, supervised by a cheerful dog, but we got a lot done and had fun and fabulous weather! Many thanks to Sharon, Lisa, Alex, Nick, Janet and DeeDee. (PS: we also discovered that pumpkin-spice marshmallows toasted to perfection and sandwiched between ginger cookies makes a passable autumn version of S’Mores!)

In the spring, we hope to build and install another picnic table at High Banks, assist with installation of a new latrine, and plant native wildflowers around the site. We also hope to work with the DNR for improvements at the Pine Point and Coffee Pot campsites. And of course, more shoreline litter pickups along the river, more educational outreach programs, and more recreational paddling and camping trips. We hope you can join us! To be added to the email list for future events, please email [email protected]

Please note: the River litter pickup and High Banks cookout is being postponed. As many of you know, Francois Fouquerell passed away unexpectedly this past week. He was quite a paddler of area waterways, and his family participated often in our litter pickups. We are cancelling our events for Saturday Oct 12 and will postpone to Oct 26 so that friends and community members can attend his memorial service and Celebration of Life activities that are scheduled for this Saturday. Stay tuned for more details , we will post a new event day and info soon! Thank you for your interest!

Litter pick-up report: Well the weather outside was frightful, but warming up by the Visitor Center’s hearth was so delightful! A hardy band of our river crew ventured forth at Paul Bunyan park today to pick up litter at the waterfront, it was a cold blustery March day for sure, but we pulled bags and bags of garbage from the shoreline, thus preventing all that litter from taking a journey across the lake and down the river! And when we warmed up inside the Visitor Center lobby, it was great to see it all decorated and ready for spring. Though we were cold outside, our hearts were warm just knowing that spring is coming, and that we did a lot of good work in a fairly short time—and we’ll be back for more! Stay tuned as we start our next season of regular litter pickups all around Bemidji, wherever the river runs through us!

Thank you Deb and Garett and Joe and Sharon and Lisa and Arnaud and Anne and Janet

For six years, Emmy-award winning host Jack Steward guided audiences on explorations of National Parks all around the US via his adventure series "Rock The Park" on ABC.

A few months ago, he took a personal camping trip to test out his homemade bike trailer for a winter camping adventure--at our adopted campsite at High Banks on the Mississippi River!

As you can see, it is a great location for winter camping, and he (and his dog) enjoyed the campsite improvements we've made, including our recently installed picnic table! Check it out on this episode on his personal YouTube channel!

Coming up November 9 from 1pm -3pm! On this afternoon off from school, come out to Lake Bemidji State Park and join us on an expedition on a giant National Geographic Map to explore Minnesota's stretch of the Mississippi River! From Itasca State Park to the Iowa border, the river winds its way north and east before it ever runs south. And the river runs through US, Bemidji! Right through the lake where our town is located. This activity is suitable for elementary to middle school students and parents are welcome. This activity is well suited to scout groups too!

There is no cost to participate, but registration is required. For more information, or to register, please contact [email protected]

Our River Project group had a wonderful meet and greet last night with Jay Kangler. Jay is the “Source to Sea” (S2S) paddler who has created the incredible “Escape with Jay” video series documenting highlights of and helpful advice for paddling journeys from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. You can see his S2S series starting here:

https://youtu.be/xQsgTN9mYqE?feature=shared

Whether you are planning a S2S, or any segment if the river, or you’ve already been and want to reminisce, Jay’s videos are great to watch! Besides S2S, he also has BWCA videos and a variety of fishing and camping how-to videos. Great stuff!

This weekend Jay is test-camping our Bemidji River Project’s adopted campsite at the western High Banks near Fox Trap in the headwaters area. In attendance were fellow River Angels and River Project work crew members including Ron and Judy Vroom , Brian Hudson , Lisa Boulay , Sharon Fruetel, me, and of course Jay Kangler . Jay regaled us with tales of the river, gave a show and tell of the various cameras he uses for his videos, and gave an amazing demo of how to operate a drone. Stayed tuned for his video on this campsite, which can be added to the water trail as a paddler option in the headwaters once the access landing is improved and we get a latrine installed

Many thanks to last night’s River Crew for good work out at the High Banks landing on the Headwaters water trail! We picked up litter, assessed erosion at the current access and surveyed nearby for a possible new landing site, and, most importantly, installed our own handmade new picnic table for the campsite. Many thanks to Chris Keenan for his expertise and leadership in our construction efforts, and thanks to participants Steve, Sharon, Brian, Joe, Chris and Janet for all hands on deck! We’ll be putting in a new woodsy campsite latrine at this site next, then it will be ready for paddlers, scout troops, family camping, youth groups, community gatherings and more!
