💗 May is Women's Health Month – And That Includes Caregivers, Too.

Women make up nearly 2/3 of family caregivers. You spend so much time taking care of everyone else – but your health matters just as much.

Senior-specific facts for women:

🔹 Depression is not a normal part of aging – but it's common and treatable. If you've lost interest in things you used to love, talk to someone.

🔹 Regular screenings save lives – mammograms, colon cancer screenings, and bone density tests are covered by Medicare

🔹 Social connection boosts health – loneliness increases the risk of heart disease and cognitive decline. A phone call, a coffee date, or a senior center visit all count.

This month, do one thing just for you. Schedule that appointment. Take that walk. Call a friend. You deserve it. 💐

What Is a Caregiver?
🧡 Who is a caregiver? You might be surprised.

A caregiver isn't just a nurse or a professional. A caregiver is anyone who provides assistance to someone else who needs it.

You might be a caregiver if you are:

A senior taking care of your spouse

An adult child or grandchild caring for an aging parent or grandparent

A neighbor or friend helping an older adult down the street

A grandparent raising a grandchild

Caregiving is especially common among baby boomers, whose parents are beginning to experience chronic health problems. In fact, an AARP study found that 54% of baby boomers are currently caring for children, parents, or both.

Most caregivers are women – but more and more men are stepping into this role, too.

Some caregivers live with the person they care for. Others live across the country. Wherever you are, whatever your situation…

🩺 Important Medicaid Update for Illinois Residents 🩺

The Family Planning Program (FPP) is a Medicaid category with a higher income limit than standard Medicaid – up to $3,841/month for an individual.

What FPP covers:
✅ Annual preventive exam
✅ Breast, cervical & testicular cancer screenings
✅ Other reproductive health services

Good to know: Family Planning Presumptive Eligibility (FPPE) provides immediate coverage for these services (at least one month, possibly longer) with self-attestation of residency and income.

⚠️ Coming soon: Illinois HFS is changing the Medicaid application process. If you qualify for FPP, you will be automatically enrolled unless you choose to opt out.

🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment – Review your plan every fall to make sure it still works for you

🍽️ Meals on Wheels – Nutritious meals delivered to homebound seniors

🚗 Transportation services – Many counties offer low-cost or free rides for medical appointments

🏠 Home modifications – Grab bars, ramps, and brighter lighting can prevent falls

💬 SHIP counselors – Free, unbiased help with Medicare questions (that's us!)

🚗 Save on Your License Plate Sticker – No Appointment Necessary! 🚗
Did you know that Illinois offers a discount on license plate stickers for seniors and individuals with disabilities? The Benefit Access Program provides eligible residents with a reduced fee on their vehicle registration.
Who Qualifies?
Age Requirements (meet one):
✅ 65 years or older before January 1 of the current year
✅ Turn 65 this year
✅ 16 years or older before January 1 of the current year and qualify as disabled
Residency Requirement:
✅ Must live in Illinois at the time of application
Income Limits (based on last closed tax year):
💰 1-person household: $33,562 or less
💰 2-person household: $44,533 or less
💰 3-person household: $55,500 or less
