National Military Appreciation Month 2026
is observed from May 1 to May 31,
honoring all U.S. military service members,
veterans, and their families
National Military Appreciation Month is a federally recognized observance established
by Congress in 1999 to honor the men and women who served or have served in the
United States Armed Forces, along with their families and supporting communities. It
provides an extended period for communities, business, and individuals to express
gratitude through events, ceremonies and outreach programs across the country.
Historical Context
The push for a dedicated month began in the late 1990s. On February 9, 1999, Senator John McCain
introduced Senate Resolution 33 to designate May as National Military Appreciation Month,
supported by Representative Duncan Hunter and over 50 veteran service organizations. This
recognition has since provided a framework for nationwide observances and local celebrations.
In 2026, National Military Appreciate Month continues to serve as a time for Americans to
honor, thank and support the US Military and their families through both formal and
community-based activities.
Loyalty Day- May 1: A day reaffirming loyalty to the United States and recognizing the
heritage of American freedom.
VE Day-May 8: Commemorates the Allied victory in Europe in 1945 marking the end
of World War II on the European front.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day – May 8: Observed on the Friday before Mother’s
Day, honoring the sacrifices and contributions of military spouses.
Armed Forces Day-May 16: Celebrated on the third Saturday of May, recognizing all
active-duty service members across the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Goard, Air
Force, Space Force
Memorial Day-May 25: The last Monday of May, a solemn day of remembrance for
those who died in military service.
The month-long observance allows for broader recognition than single-
day events, highlighting the service and sacrifices of active-duty
personnel, veterans, reservists, and military families.
May was chosen because it already contains several established military observances,
making it a natural fit for a comprehensive month of appreciation.
