🚛 Trailer Registration in Bell County
Hitting the road with a trailer? Here’s what you need to know:
➡️ Registration is required for all non-farm trailers operating on public highways.
➡️ Requirements vary based on type and weight of the trailer.
🔧 Types of Trailers:
• Manufactured (built by a trailer manufacturer)
• Homemade (built by an individual)
⚖️ Weight Categories:
• Under 4,000 lbs.
• Over 4,000 lbs. (may require a title)
📋 You may be asked to provide:
✔️ Weight Certificate
✔️ Photos of the trailer
✔️ Proof of ownership (MCO, Title, or Bill of Sale depending on the trailer)
🔍 Not sure what type of trailer you have?
Check the trailer tongue for a manufacturer’s name. If you’re unsure, a law enforcement inspection may be required. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office can assist with VIN inspections (VTR-68A).
💡 Good to know:
• Newly assembled trailers must be titled
• A VIN is required for assembled trailers
• Missing paperwork? Manufactured trailers cannot be reclassified as homemade
🛠️ Inspection Update:
As of January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. An Inspection Program Replacement Fee is included in registration costs. (Emission requirements still apply in certain counties.)
