Tenderloin Recreation Center has a new playground open for play!

The newly reopened play area at Tenderloin Recreation Center creates new opportunities for children and families to play, explore, and connect in San Francisco. In collaboration with BASE Landscape Architecture, SPEC Play worked with partners Lappset, Duncan & Grove, and Percussion Play to help bring a variety of nature-based play experiences to the project. The revitalized space supports active recreation, exploration, and community connection in the Tenderloin community.

The project was made possible through the collaboration of the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department and its partners, SF Children & Nature, Wu Yee Children’s Services, KABOOM!, and the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF).

We’re excited to celebrate three awards our collaborative projects received from ASLA NCC!

Blue Oak Landing received the 2026 Merit Award in Residential Design SPEC Play is proud to have collaborated with Fletcher Studio, and WholeTrees on this immersive, exploratory play space.

A fantastic collaboration between SPEC Play, Berliner, Trust for Public Lands, Hayward Area Park and Recreation District, and WRT Landscape Architects to have brought this much-needed park to our community, serving over 11,000 people within a 10-minute walk.

Fuller Park in Napa is open for play! 🍃

At Fuller Park in Napa, CA, SPEC Play collaborated with local artist and designer Daniel Wodarcyk of S2 Associates and the City of Napa to bring to life a one-of-a-kind custom playground from Berliner. Inspired by the form of a fallen leaf, “Leaves on a Line” was envisioned as both a visually striking public sculpture and an immersive play experience for Napa’s “Tree Park.”

Working from Wodarcyk’s original concept, SPEC Play transformed the vision into a fully accessible play space for ages 2–12 featuring climbing, sliding, spinning, swinging, music, and a colorful ground plane, designed as Napa’s first playable public artwork.

Hunters View Park is open for play!

Once temporary housing for workers at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, Hunters View had fallen into severe disrepair by the early 2000s. Today, it has been transformed into a vibrant mixed-income community with new affordable housing, parks, and community spaces for residents to gather, play, and connect. Hunters View Phase III marks the final chapter in this remarkable revitalization story.

Designed through the collaboration of Fletcher Studio, SPEC Play, and Berliner, Bayview Park brings new life to the neighborhood as its largest open space. The park features gathering spaces, shaded seating, family picnic areas, and a dynamic rope play experience within the community playground, overlooking the Bay. Built with extensive community input, the project reflects a shared vision for a more connected and vibrant neighborhood.

Join us tomorrow 5/12 at 10:30am for the ribbon cutting at Fuller Park!

[para español👇] Sneak peek: Fuller Park’s new play experience is almost here!

We’ve added over 20 ground‑level elements designed for inclusive and group play, amongst two large‑scale climbing structures that invite adventure. Kids will find spinners, swings, hammocks, musical components, and a rubberized safety surface with overhead shade and playful patterns that guide movement and spark imagination.

Bring the family and be among the first to explore what’s new at Fuller Park during our ribbon cutting on Tuesday, May 12th at 10:30 AM. This is play designed for all ages and abilities, with plenty of room to discover, move, and create together.

We’re excited to celebrate Blue Oak Landing receiving a 2026 Merit Award in Residential Design from ASLA- NCC. SPEC Play is proud to have collaborated with Fletcher Studio and David Baker Architects on this immersive, exploratory play space. 🌿

Located just north of downtown Vallejo, the housing provides 75 supportive affordable homes for families, and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Together, the team created a playful biophilic environment that connects residents with nature through accessible pathways, native planting, gathering spaces, gardens, and a forest-inspired play environment overlooking Austin Creek.

The play space features durable Black Locust timber elements from our partners at WholeTrees, that encourage imaginative, intergenerational play.
We’re honored to have contributed to a project that celebrates the power of nature, play, and community.
