Wait- did that rock just make noise? 🪨🫢

That’s not a rock! 🐍 This sssstartled snake was discovered by Lory’s Trail Crew while they were working hard to maintain our beautiful park. (We 💚 our Trail Crew!!!!!)

Hidden in that tall grass is a Prairie Rattlesnake. These amazing pit vipers have a hollow structure made of keratin on the tip of their tail called a rattle, which is where they get their name. They use it to warn predators to ‘back off’ before they strike!

Administering venom into their prey is very taxing, and takes a lot of energy for the snake! So rattlesnakes will use camouflage to hide, or rattle their tail before resorting to a bite!

It is very important to always stay on designated trails and out of tall grasses! Always give snakes tons of space, and move away slowly. If you have a dog (more commonly known as a hiking buddy 🐶), keep them on a leash and discourage them from sticking their nose into grasses, rocks, and crevices you cannot see clearly. Snakes tend to be afraid of humans, and will avoid confrontation.
