Hello Members!
The Richland County Genealogical Society is selling some Broken Bank notes of various denominations issued from the Richland and Huron Bank (see attachment for a picture). We are offering these bank notes to members before we place them on eBay or other sites. The prices are based on a recent auction of similar bank notes.
This first bank of Mansfield was established in 1816 before many banking regulations were in place, and it printed its own paper money (bank notes). The legislature refused to recognize the bank’s charter, but the founders went ahead with operations anyway. Within about three months, the bank became mired in numerous lawsuits and within a year it was deeply in trouble. Over the next few years, the bank’s officers lost their land, money, and reputations, and the institution effectively collapsed. Its paper currency became worthless.
