We're excited to announce that a champion is in our midst! District Maintenance Worker Greg Soto returned to the American Public Works Association's annual Public Works Expo this week to once again compete in the National Roadeo! And this time, he's bringing home the title!

Maintenance Worker I is an entry level position that assists in maintenance and operation of the District’s water treatment and sewage collection systems. Work is done as part of an assigned crew, and technical skills, training, and certifications are incorporated into the first year of employment with a goal of promotion to Maintenance Worker II.

The District is celebrating almost two full decades of no findings from the state auditor!

District Finance Manager Jenny Signs noted that the staff’s commitment to following District policy, and state and federal law played a large part in the outcome. “District staff take the responsibility of compliance with regulations seriously and work hard to meet their duty to the community in the course of handling public funds.”

One great way to conserve water and protect our watershed is considering native plant options for your landscaping!

After 18 months of planning and collaboration, a beautiful new demonstration garden was planted last fall at the Sudden Valley Welcome Center (1850 Lake Whatcom Boulevard). The garden features over 300 native plants selected for their beauty, resilience, and support for birds, pollinators, and clean water. Interpretive signs throughout the space offer tips on creating your own native garden, reducing stormwater pollution, and protecting our local watershed. It was created through a partnership between the Sudden Valley Community Association, Whatcom County Public Works, and the Whatcom Conservation District as part of the Neighborhood Native Landscaping Program.

Stop by on June 4 from 5:30–7:00 PM for a casual, drop-in community event featuring free native plant seeds, activities for the kids, light refreshments, and a chance to chat with Whatcom County Master Gardeners and get your gardening questions answered.

It's National Public Works Week! For one spring week every year, the American Public Works Association encourages us to remember, recognize, and appreciate the infrastructure and people who keep our world running day to day.

Public works is all around you! Our small but mighty crew is in the field every day performing maintenance, repairs, and all of the tasks needed to provide clean drinking water and make sure waste is taken care of. It's easy to forget that under our feet are miles and miles of water and sewer pipes, and that's our goal - keep the system running so well, you can count on it without thinking about it!
