Evergreen: A Brief History
In early 1982 three families in Bellingham, Washington came together, at the suggestion of a Special Education teacher at the Redwood School, to form an adult family home for their children who were young adults and aging out of the public school system. The families formed the non-profit organization Evergreen Home Association, the first of itβs kind in Washington State.
Thus began a long and proud tradition of Evergreen maintaining a strong client focus and leading edge services by adhering to a philosophy of low client and staff turnover, client based programming, a small number of clients, and a strong focus on caring, compassionate, and creative services.
Throughout the 1980βs, Evergreen began to grow from the three original clients and pursued a residential service contract with the state which allowed Evergreen clients to begin living in their own homes and apartments. By the end of the decade Evergreen was serving 10 clients all living in their own residences. Today we serve 16 clients, with more than 45 full and part-time staff. Several original clients and board members are still a part of Evergreen.
Over the years, Evergreen has gone through a number of changes in office locations and names, but our core values and essence remains the same. The terminology we use today is different than it was in the beginning, but many of the ideals are the same. A commitment to serving each individual, and adapting our services to our participants needs help to ensure that Evergreen will maintain its reputation within the community and the trust of the family members of each client.
