You may notice our seasonal voluntary watering schedule signs around Bellingham. These serve as a friendly annual reminder to help reduce outdoor water use during the dry summer months. Outdoor watering can increase our community’s water use by up to 50%, and much of that is lost to evaporation, over-watering, and run-off.

While our drinking water supply is stable and we don’t anticipate shortages, high summer demand places extra strain on our water treatment plant. Following the voluntary watering schedule helps keep our system running efficiently all season long.

From June 1 to September 30:
💧Skip watering on Mondays
💧Odd-numbered addresses: Water only on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
💧Even-numbered addresses: Water only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays

Want to save even more water? Consider letting your lawn go dormant. It naturally greens up again when cooler, wetter weather returns.

City water customers can also take our Water Conservation Pledge to receive free outdoor water‑saving tools at cob.org/conserve.

Hey y’all, James Street is getting a new shared-use path! But first, we’ve got a heads up about construction…

James Street will be closed between Bakerview and Kellogg starting Monday, June 8, for about three weeks.

We need to fully close the road to build a retaining wall for this portion of the trail. Once that’s done, we’ll open at least one driving lane for the rest of the project.

Flaggers will be at both ends of the closure during business hours to direct drivers to the detour, assist people walking, and help residents access their driveways.

Ever wondered how the City of Bellingham funds bike and pedestrian safety improvements like new bike lanes and push‑button‑activated flashing crosswalks?

Hear from Public Works Assistant Director of Transportation Tim Hohmann on how our voter‑approved 0.02% sales tax supports bike, pedestrian, and transit upgrades citywide.

This dedicated transportation funding delivers spot improvements at a dozen or more locations each year — and helps us secure an average of $17 million annually in state and federal grants to advance larger projects, including the new James Street multimodal path now under construction.
