Last Thursday, the crew of Coast Guard Station Bellingham gathered with family, friends, and interagency partners at the Bellingham Yacht Club to bid farewell to our Commanding Officer, LT Terrell Sisk, and welcome our new Commanding Officer, LT William Trumper.

Under LT Sisk's leadership, the station saw unprecedented operational success, logging thousands of underway hours to ensure the safety and security of our maritime approaches and local waterways. We thank him for his steadfast leadership, his advocacy for the crew and their families, and his unwavering commitment to the communities we serve. For the crew’s record breaking numbers in 2025, they were awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation award from the District Commander.

Thank you to everyone who attended to support the crew and honor this transition of leadership. Welcome aboard, LT Trumper!

TGIF from the crews of United States Coast Guard Station Bellingham.

Over the last few weeks our crews have been balancing training, securing our maritime approaches, search and rescue response, and fisheries boardings during the Lingcod opener. The mission keeps moving, so we do too.

🛟Heading out on the water soon? Next week Safe Boating Campaign reminds all to wear your life jacket, check the forecast, and bring a working VHF radio.

At U.S. Coast Guard Station Bellingham we routinely train in Non-Compliant Vessel Pursuit (NCVP) techniques to maintain safe and effective response capabilities. Station Bellingham is the northern most boat station in the U.S. Coast Guard Northwest area of responsibility sharing its border with Canada. Station Bellingham's missions include: law enforcement, search and rescue, controlling and securing the border, and defending the maritime transportation system. These evolutions strengthen boat handling, teamwork, and decision-making—ensuring we’re ready to respond when situations escalate on the water and keep everyone safe.

🚨Earlier today, watchstanders at U.S. Coast Guard Station Bellingham and Coast Guard Sector Puget Soundresponded to a report of a kayaker in Bellingham Bay experiencing a medical issue.

Two kayakers contacted the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 reporting one person had an elevated heart rate and nausea. Station Bellingham launched a response boat and coordinated with Bellingham Fire Department to ensure medical support was ready ashore.

Our crew safely recovered the kayaker and transferred the patient to EMS for higher medical care.

This incident is a reminder for those on the water:
• Carry a working VHF marine radio (which assisted in today’s immediate response)
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket
• Call for help early if something doesn’t feel right

🚨This morning around 8 a.m., Station Bellingham responded to a kayaker stranded on the rocks near Lummi Island after being overtaken by weather.

Marine conditions at the time included sustained winds 16–18 knots with gusts up to 27 knots under a Small Craft Advisory. Combined with cold late-February water temperatures in the inland waters — typically in the mid-40s °F 🥶conditions can quickly become dangerous for paddlecraft.

The outcome was positive: the individual, his dog, and all gear were safely recovered without injury.

A major factor in the successful resolution was a working marine VHF radio. Direct communication allowed crews to assess the situation immediately and execute the safest recovery plan.

Before heading out:
• Check the marine forecast and advisories
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket
• Carry a fully charged, waterproof VHF marine radio

Preparation makes the difference when conditions change quickly.
