⚠️ URGENT ACTION NEEDED ⚠️

Oppose a proposed rule from the United States Postal Service that could create new barriers to voting by mail ➡️ https://www.lwv.org/take-action/oppose-proposed-mail-and-absentee-ballot-regulations

The USPS public comment period is open until July 2, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Washington voters have successfully cast their ballots by mail for more than a decade. Every registered voter in our state receives a ballot by mail, making vote-by-mail the foundation of our election system. This proposal would impose new federal requirements on election mail and give USPS a new role in election administration — responsibilities that belong to state and local election officials.
Washington's vote-by-mail system is secure, accessible, and trusted by voters across the state. Changes that could delay ballots, increase administrative burdens, or make it harder for eligible voters to participate threaten a system that works well for Washingtonians.

Juneteenth: A BRIEF discussion. Juneteenth is a celebration of emancipation and black liberation, marking the end of slavery at the close of the US Civil War. However, the fight for Black liberation was not resolved at this time. The US has failed to extend the promise of liberty to all.

Anti-Blackness and racial disparities: Millions of people protested across the US following the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd by the police—and the fight justice and accountability for abuse and killings suffered by Black people in the US continues.

Activists are also demanding better conditions for Black people in every area of life because of the racial disparities that still exist. For examples...

White households hold significantly more wealth than Black households even when educational attainment, employment status, income levels, and homeownership between white and Black households are the same. And, Studies show that Black students were overrepresented in school disciplinary actions, were more frequently referred to law enforcement for arrest, and were arrested at rates disproportionate to their population size

Antiracism requires us to avoid pathologizing Blackness—insisting that racial outcome disparities are due to a defect in Black people—and instead acknowledge how the conditions for racial outcome disparities have been systemic and structural.

If your DACA is expiring soon, don't wait.

Consider renewing early when there are 150+ days left before expiration. Some renewals are taking as long as 7 months to process right now. USCIS is failing to process applications on time — and our neighbors are paying the price. We are demanding better.

So, you've decided you want to write your representatives ✍️

💡That's great! We know it can be intimidating though, so we've got some tips for you!

Basic Structure:

🟪 Introduce yourself: Name, where you live, that you are a constituent
🟪 What is the issue? State the issue/critical point that you want to make
🟪 Why do you care? What is YOUR story about the issue and it’s impact on your life?
🟪 The evidence: What are the facts and data supporting your position?
🟪 Make the ask: What, specifically, do you want your legislator to do?

Bonus tips!

🟪 Only address one issue at a time.
🟪 Personalize your message!
🟪 Why are you writing this rep specifically?
🟪 Follow up on your letters if you don't hear back!

So, how do you figure out how to contact your government anyway? 🤔

Hopefully you know that you are able to reach out and contact your elected officials at *any* level of government—this includes those found at the city town level (like mayor), those at the county level (like county executive), those at the state level (like state legislators or governor), or those at the federal level (like senators or even the POTUS).

There are three easy ways to find out who your reps are AND how to contact them:

🟪 Use the League directory: Each year, the LWV of Bellingham/Whatcom County puts out an updated Directory of Elected Officials. It lists all the elected officials for folks living in Whatcom County AND how to contact them. Available on our website/link in bio!

🟪 Use the LWVUS directory: Find your representatives at every level from the LWVUS Education Fund ➡️ lwv.org/take-action/find-your-elected-officials

🟪 Use official websites: Head to the official website of the governing body you want to contact (i.e. WhiteHouse.gov or leg.wa.gov)

Next up tips for testifying, what you need to know about writing
your reps, and more!

⚡YES!⚡

🟦 As few as 84 contacts in favor of a bill can influence passage;*
🟦 Just 17 contacts in opposition can secure a negative vote!*
