Captured in action! Christopher Lee, an Equity in STEM AmeriCorps Fellow at UW's Community Engagement and Leadership Education Center, shares a moment from a lab session with students.

“While recording action potentials from a cockroach leg during one of our neuroscience lab activities, one middle schooler said, ‘I can't wait for college so I can learn more about this!’”

Thank you, Christopher, for inspiring future scientists!

The AmeriCorps team at Glacier Peak Institute has been up to big things these past 6 months! They have been providing in-school and afterschool programs for the Darrington School District as well as running summer camps and partner programs with various community organizations!

"One notable event the AmeriCorps team participated in was a Day of Service with the Darrington Middle School. Over 90 students got out in the community, completing over a dozen projects around Darrington. They helped maintain trails with the Forest Service, cleaned up local parks with the Darrington Public Works Department, planted native plants and tulips around the school grounds, helped clean and prepare donation boxes for the Darrington Food Bank, and harvested nearly 20 pounds of produce from the GPI Garden/Greenhouse to donate to the Darrington Food Bank.”

-Matt Apuzzo, Supervisor at Glacier Peak Institute (WSU Pullman)

Ryan Nguyen is November's Member Spotlight! Serving as the AmeriCorps Food Pantry Engagement Coordinator at Edmonds College, Ryan helps coordinate opportunities for the student community on campus by spreading awareness of food insecurity experienced by the local community.

'Ryan's service continues to improve the lives of our campus community who are experiencing food insecurity. One example that stands out was his coordination of a campus-wide food drive competition. He was able to get multiple departments involved and in the end, collected over 12,000 items that were distributed to our students and the Nourishing Network. It is through these engagement opportunities that Ryan brings his passion, enthusiasm and his commitment to serving others.'

- Stewart Sinning, Program Manager, Center for Student Engagement and Leadership, Edmonds College

Thank you, Ryan, for your outstanding service to the Edmonds community!

Creating Connections & a Community of Practice

Travis Tennessen, Director at Western Washington University’s Center for Community Learning is our featured speaker. Zoey Knox, who is a CLEC AmeriCorps Gateways College Success Mentor Coordinator at The Evergreen State College's Gateways for Incarcerated Youth Program, will be taking a key role in the design clinic activity. A Community of Practice is a group of people who share a common concern or a set of problems who come together to fulfill group and individual goals.

Come connect with other fellows and AmeriCorps members across the state and experience a design clinic to brainstorm problem-solving as a group! This session is a great opportunity to establish a community of support as our program year kicks off.

Jacob O’Donnell is our September CLEC AmeriCorps Member Spotlight! Jacob helped launch the Western Washington University Community Service Center and helped improve their W.H.O.L.E food pantry by creating a website, a regular newsletter and vibrant Instagram presence. He helped plan multiple days of service events including MLK Day, Giving Tuesday, and Earth Week. With his team, Jacob was able to recruit 230 volunteers to support their events.
Jacob said, “My biggest successes were running the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day service projects (blanket making, kit making, winter shelter cleanup) and Earth Week service projects (Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association work party, open mic, sustainable-eating tote bag decorating and herb garden planting, environmental hope presentation and activities).”

Thank you, Jacob, for your outstanding service!
