Thank you to everyone who came out to American Heroes Park this evening for Bellevue’s 25th Annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

A special thank you to Bill and Barb O’Donnell and the members of the Bellevue Kiwanis Club for their continued dedication to organizing this meaningful ceremony and ensuring that the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the sacrifices made in the years since September 11, 2001, are never forgotten.

We’re honored to share a few images from this evening’s moving tribute. Thanks to Mayor Rusty Hike, Bellevue Chamber President Diane Bruce and Deb Kohlscheen for providing the great pictures.

It has been 25 years since the horrific events of September 11, 2001.

For so many Americans, it is a day we will never forget. We remember where we were when we first heard the news, and even then, we could not fully comprehend the magnitude of what was happening or how profoundly that day would change our country and our world.

Here in Bellevue, there is another lasting memory from that day. Many of us remember watching Air Force One, with President George W. Bush aboard, arrive at Offutt Air Force Base as our nation's leaders responded to the attacks. With America's airspace virtually empty, the sight of Air Force One in the skies over Bellevue and Offutt added to the surreal and somber feeling of that day.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and honor the extraordinary courage of the firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, military personnel, emergency responders and ordinary citizens who ran toward danger to help others. We also remember the men and women who answered our nation's call in the years that followed, along with their families who shared in their sacrifice.

September 11 changed America forever, but it also showed us the very best of the American spirit — courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy, neighbors helping neighbors, and a nation coming together during one of its darkest hours.

On this 25th anniversary, the City of Bellevue asks everyone to take a moment to remember those we lost, honor those who served and sacrificed, and reflect on the lessons of that day.

Most importantly, we must never forget.

PARK RENOVATION UPDATE

The City of Bellevue Recreation Department has been receiving a number of questions regarding the park renovation projects currently underway at Willow Springs Park and Twin Ridge II Park.

The locations of both parks are identified on the included map. As part of the City of Bellevue’s ongoing Park Improvement Plan, the older playground equipment at each location will be removed and replaced with new playground facilities, trails and picnic shelters.

Both projects are expected to be completed in approximately one month, weather permitting. Renderings of the new playground equipment have also been posted at each site so residents can get a look at what’s coming.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as these improvements take place. For everyone’s safety, please stay out of all areas that are under construction.

The City of Bellevue is excited to see these improvements completed and provide our residents with improved spaces to enjoy!

Splash Pad Closure at Looking Glass Park!

The City of Bellevue’s Facilities Maintenance Department reports that the splash pad at Looking Glass Park will be closed until mid-afternoon today, Thursday, September 10, while M.U.D. completes waterline repairs.

The repair is expected to be completed quickly, and the splash pad should reopen later this afternoon and remain open throughout the weekend.

This Friday, September 11, the Bellevue community will come together to remember, honor and reflect on the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Kiwanis Club of Bellevue will host the 25th Annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 6 p.m. at American Heroes Park. The ceremony honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11, the first responders who answered the call, and the service members and families who have sacrificed in the years since.

The ceremony will include the traditional Ringing of the Four Fives in honor of fallen first responders and the Roll Call of the Fallen, accompanied by a ceremonial salute from the Bellevue East Junior ROTC and Abraham Lincoln Junior ROTC of Council Bluffs.

Representatives from the Bellevue Police and Fire Departments and Offutt Air Force Base will participate, with a musical tribute provided by the Sarpy Serenaders. Gold Star families in attendance will also be recognized with a yellow rose.

Bill O’Donnell founded Bellevue’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony with a simple commitment: to make sure those who sacrificed are never forgotten.

“I didn’t want the victims of the 9/11 attacks and our warriors and their local families to be forgotten. We as a nation tend to forget those who put it all on the line for America. Not on my watch!”

Twenty-five years later, that commitment remains just as important.

The City of Bellevue invites our community to join us Friday evening at American Heroes Park as we honor the fallen, recognize our heroes and ensure that future generations understand the significance of September 11, 2001.

We will never forget.

Thompson Park Playground Temporarily Closed!

The Bellevue Parks Department has announced that beginning today, September 8, 2026, the Thompson Park Playground will be closed and fenced off for the remainder of the week while the playground surface is being resurfaced.

Please stay out of the fenced area and allow the resurfacing project adequate time to properly settle before the temporary fencing is removed.

The remainder of Thompson Park, including the pickleball courts, will remain open and available for use.

The sun was shining on the new Bellevue Waterpark this afternoon as construction continues on this impressive project. As I was driving by, I noticed this blue line reflecting off the recently installed glass covering and had to pull over to grab a picture.

It was definitely more impressive in person, but I can now see exactly what people have been talking about as they drive by. The new waterpark is really starting to take shape!

Look for more updates on the construction of this exciting project later this month.

🎉 HAPPY RETIREMENT, ED! 🎉

Today, we said farewell to a longtime member of our Police Department family, Ed Foreman, as he begins a well-earned retirement after nearly 30 years of service to our community.

Ed’s journey with the City began in 1997 as a part-time employee, working with Bellevue TV and at the Bellevue Police Department front desk. In 2006, Ed transitioned to a full-time position with Code Enforcement, where he would spend the next 20 years serving the citizens of Bellevue.

If you’ve had the opportunity to work with Ed, speak with him, or simply get to know him over the years, you already know what an incredible person he is. Ed brought knowledge, dedication, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping people every single day.

For many years, Ed has been the backbone of Code Enforcement, and saying he leaves behind some pretty big shoes to fill would be an understatement.

More importantly, we’re going to miss the person behind the job, a great coworker, a familiar face, and a friend to so many.

Ed, thank you for nearly three decades of service to the City of Bellevue and its residents. We wish you nothing but happiness and plenty of adventures in whatever comes next.

Happy retirement, Ed! Enjoy the days ahead you’ve certainly earned them! 👏🎉
