Our Story

64 adults. 122 children. 42 Homes. 21 Years. At Habitat for Humanity, we build. We build because we believe that everyone, everywhere, should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. More than building homes, we build communities, we build hope and we build the opportunity for families to help themselves. Sarpy County is one of the most expensive counties in Nebraska to rent a home or apartment; to afford a two-bedroom unit, working for minimum wage, a person would need to work at least 76 hours per week (http://nlihc.org/oor/nebraska); which makes life extremely difficult for the low-income families we work with. By providing financial literacy education through required classwork, Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County is not only assisting with housing, but preparing the parents and the children for a life of improvement. Accepted families attend educational workshops, including an individual conference with Consumer Credit Counseling Services and a series of home-buyer workshops such as budgeting, home repair, and general classes on how to be a good neighbor. With the stability of owning their own home, the family has more stability, security, and job prospects. By building a home, we are positioning the parents and children for more opportunities for success.
